Outdoor Birdhouses

Although many people find that birds can be a pain in the butt, destroying vegetable gardens and just being an overall pest for the average gardener. But, at the same time, there are many people who find birds a peaceful past-time.

If you are one of those people who prefer to have a little wildlife in your yard, you may want to consider adding a simple bird house or two, as having birds houses around your yard is a great way to entice a new bird family to start building their nest. Many species will actually return year after year to mate and rear their young in the same nest.

There are many different types of outdoor bird houses that you may consider adding, and below you find many different wooden bird houses that will not only add a little something extra to your yard decor, but will also entire a bird population during the spring and summer months.

Wood Bird Houses

There are generally many different types of bird houses that you may want to consider. Just remember that the size of the hole/entrance, will typically determine what kind of bird will make roots in your bird house.

Also consider that some bird prefer certain types of bird houses over another- IE community bird houses or solo family houses.

The wooden bird houses seem to be very popular among enthusiasts, as well as the birds themselves. You'll find that you can make or purchase a simple bird house or you can make, or purchase, a more elaborate one. Either way, as long as the hole/entrance is appropriately sized, the birds should love the wooden bird houses.

Also remember that with the wood birdhouses, you will want to make sure that there is some means of cleaning. Sometimes the roofs can be removed, and in other cases the backs cam be slipped off. Either way, you should make sure that there is some method that will allow you to clean out the bird house ever year or so.

Make a Bird House

If you would rather spend a weekend making your own bird houses instead of purchasing one or two from the store, then by all means go for it.

You can find a number of bird house plans online, or you can just purchase a bird house kit so that everything is included except the basic tools to construct the bird house.

My father is a crafty man, and after purchasing one wood bird house from eBay, he was able to configure is own bird houses after that. He carefully cut, glued, and nailed the pieces together, and gave family and friends bird houses for Christmas that year. To this day, our bird houses and those that he created all have housed several families of birds.

You can do this too... Whether you create your own bird house plans, buy a kit, or get the idea from another bird house and begin crafting, you can make bird houses to give as gifts to your friends. Plus, by creating your own bird house, you can make it as simple or elaborately designed as you know how.

The main thing that you want to make sure that you get right, if you are crafting your own bird houses from scratch and from your own design, is that you make sure that you get the entrance hole the right size. Too small and the adult birds won't fit, and too large and the adult birds won't want to use the bird house. Generally, he proper size for a bird house entrance hole should be about 1" to 2" in diameter, but as you can see below the entrance hole will vary per bird species.

For example, the entrance hole for a Downy Woodpecker, Nuthatch, and Titmouse, should be about 1-1/4", whereas a Caroline Wren should be about 1-1/2". Now, although that may not seem much of a difference, but to the birds it's a good deal difference.

Build a Purple Martin Bird House

Because martins have a gregarious nesting habit, you can use a little more skill and imagination while constructing a bird house for martins. Remember that you need to consider the temperature and the accessibility when constructing the bird house. Typically, a multi-storied apartment house will attract a colony of martins. Make sure that once built, you paint the outside of the bird house white to reflect any heat. You want to make sure that you place the bird house in an open area with a nearby source of water as this will induce the martins to nest in your bird house.

Bird houses can lead to disaster in Alaska. They can attract bears. I want to buy a bird and cage for indoors. Birds are easier to care for than many oher domestic animals, dogs, cats, etc...
