Workshop Machinery-Automotive Equipment transmission jacks.
Auto Transmission jacks foot operated.
A foot operated 2 stage transmission jack has become standard equipment in most auto shops these days, as they work better and are easier to use than the older styled ones.
The cheap Chinese ones are not worth the bother unless you only do a few transmissions each year. They leak oil, lose pressure and fail after a bit of real work!
Ensure you buy one with a head that has chains to lock the transmission in place and beware of uneven surfaces when you wheel the transmission to the bench for repairs or rebuilding.
Good quality wheels are important as you will discover the first time you do a transmission rebuild on a four wheel drive.
The transmission jack must roll smoothly on the floor when it is carrying a large transmission as safety is a major factor. these transmissions will cause serious injury if the jack is not stable and it trips over a lump or even a small nut left on the floor.
If you are using a free floor or clear span hoist, it is much easier to locate the jack exactly where you need it to lower the transmission out of the car or truck without tripping over the floor plate.
I prefer a two stage ram as it is more compact and can lift higher.
The beauty of having one of these transmission jacks, is it makes pulling the transmission off the drive spline so much safer and easier. You can wiggle the transmission while you decrease or increase the height with your foot pump to line the trans up straight while you joggle it.
I did buy a cheap Chinese one to test it in my factory before I sold them.
It was rubbish! I refused to stock them or sell them, they are for the most part dead-set dangerous like their hoists.
