Writing a love poem
70Writing a Love Poem
Nothing can be more magical than a poem that flows naturally from one’s feelings. If you’re not in love, don’t attempt to write a love poem. The dryness will show. You can’t fake love with words that come from the head.
How do you write a love poem then?
It is better to write what comes to mind and then rearrange the lines rather than follow a set of steps.
What words describe the presence of your loved one?
Imagine both of you are in a forest. What words will capture that magnetic force or better still that primeval force that makes you unable to walk without him? What will describe the power of that scent that mingles with your breath and desire? Just write what comes to mind, for example:
…..Like this branch, hard and full,
twining around my skin
that are embers ….
Just go on naming the words with the feelings that flow with it.
Then , go over what you have written and remember these three part s of a piece:
a) Statement of what you want to write about (In short story writing, it is the statement of the conflict) It’s answering the question “What”. What is your message ? Is it her irresistible presence? Is it her fine qualities? Her being distant and your torment? Whatever it is that will answer the question “What” - It is this part.
In writing, we are taught this: Show. Don’t tell. For example: Don’t say : Your beautiful eyes make me forget time and distance. Present a situation that tells about her eyes that make you forget time and distance. You could write it this way: Like starless nights, your eyes speak of ripples and circles…or you can use other metaphors that show her beautiful eyes making you forget time and distance.
b) Show the conflict - there’s passion on your side and this you are sure of. In contrast to how you feel, there’s no similar passion on the other side. Use metaphors for your feelings that are in contrast with her; or may not be in contrast with her.
c) Resolve the conflict … Are you pursuing the object of your love with whatever it takes? Are you happy with what is? Are you anxious of the future?
Writing a love poem carries with it its own magic even if the love spoken of is not equally reciprocated. The beauty of a love poem is that it functions as a fulfillment and as a therapy. This is not to say that you don’t need to be loved. Everybody wants to be loved. But in the event that the love you hold is not fully reciprocated, you don’t lose anything. The poem that you gave birth to is a fulfillment in itself.
Your fulfillment will be much more, of course, when your love gets reciprocated.
Here’s a poem I wrote a year ago. I thought this was a love poem:
Like a birdsong

Like a birdsong
you’re with the wind
on my brow
in this early morning light.
With the rustle of leaves
outside my memory’s door
I tiptoe like a child
to keep you one moment more
or I will sulk
in the roofless corner
of my fears
forever wishing
I was a forest.

Thank you for sharing such valuable information about writing a poem. :) Your poem is beautiful. :) I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to write a poem about love, but I think what you've shared are basic principles for any type of emotion.
Nice hub! :)
Thank you, Pam, for leaving a comment. It feels good that people find time to drop by and leave a kind word.

It's good to know that you love this website. Thanks, Savannah, for visiting my page. See you around hubpages.
You strike a chord again with this hub. How about my favorite, "if a star would fall everytime I think of you, the sky would by empty." Its not my original though. You inspire me to go back to poetry.
delzky, If you are a poet and leave poetry at the backseat in favor of practical survival issues, something in you dies everyday. Even if I have very little time for writing, I decided to pick up my writing feet because I felt wilted. With baby steps I will get somewhere with my pen. It will not be soon but it's coming.
Btw, you mentioned that you are building an SBI site. I am still in the process of building my site though I have been promoting SBI in my blogs for quite a time now. You will know when my SBI site is finally launched. It is taking me too long to build my site because I have a job which is demanding. I hope one day I can have more time for writing and music.
Thanks for leaving a generous comment here. Good luck to your writing and classic guitar!
Btw, Where in the Philippines are you?
My attempts at writing a poem have never resulted to anything I liked. I might give it another try with the help of your tips here. Thank you.
Hi jill of alltrades,
I really look forward to your reconnection with the Muse. Poetry is such a beautiful way of expressing something that is "unsayable" in any other way.
Thanks for leaving a comment!
