Wrong Turn

2003, ***, Horror

West Virginia is wild and not so wonderful in "Wrong Turn." A group of teenagers find themselves stranded due to car trouble somewhere in the woods of good old W. Va., where men are men and animals too. They run into a more deranged threesome than usual-real nightmare material. It reminded me of the Peacock Boys in one of the old "X-Files" episodes. These three inbred boys are brutal and probably resorted to cannibalism after Ma died (no one was there to serve up the grub).

The movie starts out as Chris (Desmond Harrington) drives on a main highway through WV, and there is a pile-up of cars. He realizes he isn't going anywhere fast, so he decides to make a u-turn, and takes to the back roads instead. Chris gets into a minor accident with an SUV in front of him and quickly realizes they've run over barbwire. Then he meets Jessie (Eliza Dushku) and her friends, who are in the SUV that he runs into. They all think the wire is some sort of trap, and decide to go find help. They split up (bad decision) and one by one, they fall victim to the good ol' inbred boys.

This movie is very frightening. It's one of those movies where you are caught. You just hope and pray for the best for the characters. You have to remind yourself it's only a movie, but as I always say, every movie has a bit of reality to it. Who really knows what goes on up in the backwoods of West Virginia, or in any off-road, less-traveled area. "Wrong Turn" is very intense, gruesome, and bloody. It might make you re-think camping trips, unless you take Rambo or just decide to set up tent in your own backyard!

I think this movie is way underrated. I love the scene where they try to quietly leave the shack-hopuse while the murderous freaks are sleeping. So much suspense and tension.
