What is MMA

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport where opponents are allowed to use a variety of fighting techniques and disciplines from all forms of martial arts.

The rules of MMA both the use of grappling (floor fighting) and striking opponents with feet, fists and elbows from any position possible, be it up on the feet or down on the floor. Hence, a grappler may be pitched in the ring against a kick boxer or muay thai expert etc

In 1993 The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) was founded and everything moved on from there. Athletes from various arts were put into the ring together and the rest is history.

Initially little thought was given to safety, however more recently this has changed somewhat and allowed the sport of MMA to become mainstream.
