Basic Chicken Stew

If you are looking for tasty, healthy and easy to prepare meals then I suggest you invest in a slow cooker. The slow cooker will allow you to make great soups, stews, roasts and even breakfast without advanced cooking skills.

You will need to know how to slice and dice and be able to follow a recipe. Once you have made a few meals you can then start to add your own twists to the recipes and experiment as you go.

In time your cooking repertoire will increase you the meals become more and more diverse.

Chicken Stew:

You will need a slow cooker, a good cutting knife and a cutting board.

Ingredients:

1- 2 chicken legs

2- 1 medium turnip diced

3- 1 large carrot sliced

4- 1 medium cabbage chopped

5- 1 medium cooking onion diced

6- 2 gloves garlic peeled and sliced

7- Sea salt, black pepper to taste

8- 2 tbsp flour

9- 1 tbsp olive oil

10- 3 cups water

11- If you like a hot sauce.

You can add ½ cup diced tomatoes to this recipe to give it a richer taste. Add it just after you add the flour in step seven below.

Preparation:

1- add olive oil to slow cooker set on medium

2- add garlic and onions- let cook four minutes

3- add carrots and turnip

4- let cook five minutes

5- add water

6- skin chicken legs and add to slow cooker

7- add flour and stir

8- add sea salt

9- Cook for 8 hours on low heat.

If you do not have a slow cooker then slice, dice and chop the ingredients first; then put olive oil in large stew pot or the biggest pot you have the add other ingredients as above. The main change is the cook time. This meal can be made in 60 minutes from start to finish this way.

The advantage of the slow cooker is that you can prepare all the ingredients the night before and then add them to the slow cooker in the morning as you are getting ready to head out the door. Use a low ehat setting if you will be away for the day. When you come home your meal will be ready to eat when you are.

The slow cooker is a busy cook’s good friend as it enables you to prepare good meals and take care of any other business that you need to do.

Bob, I may sound dumb but could you enlighten me on what is a slow cooker ? Is it a special type of pressure cooker with a long-long cooking time ?

Hi Bob, on the basis of an earlier hub of yours I invested in a slowcooker and am now creating all sorts of delicious meals. Thanks for that Bob. It's a sausage casserole tomorrow, only cos I have sausages to spare, so I'm going to look up a recipe this evening. The one above sounds delicious too, though it would be too much for me, being a guy on his own.

I had this for dinner last night Bob and really enjoyed it.  My daughter came home unexpectedly from college for the day and I was wondering if she would eat this because of the turnip which I didn't tell her was in the pot.  She took the cover off and said ymmmm this smells gooood.  While she was eating I asked her what vegetable she liked best.   She said she liked the potatoes which she soon found out were turnip.  It's good to trick the kids! lol

Hi Dottie, thanks for the story, it is surprising how many make a similar mistake, potatoes for turnips with this dish.
