Kitchenware - Bamboo Cutting Board And Care

Updated on June 30, 2011

A bamboo cutting board is an eco-friendly alternative to wood cutting boards.

Bamboo is, surprisingly enough, a grass and one that grows at a rapid rate. It can be grown and harvested on a regular basis, yet it doesn't have the same impact as when using maple or other hardwood tree species.

Trees take years to grow and mature, bamboo grows within a season and can be harvested once it reaches full height.

Once bamboo reaches it's maximum height, it won't continue to grow, even if it's left rooted, which is why it's both practical and eco-friendly to use this medium in and around your home.

It makes for a cost-effective product, as well as being user friendly and easy to clean and care for.

Bamboo Cutting Board

Bamboo Cutting Boards

A bamboo cutting board is a largely inexpensive kitchenware item.

They're cheap to buy, easy to care for and a great surface to work upon when it comes to food preparation.

Bamboo is an incredibly tough material and as durable, if not more so, than a wooden cutting board.

Bearing in mind the fact that they're made from a renewable, eco-friendly material, they're a great product for those that prefer to live a greener lifestyle.

A bamboo cutting board will also add a clean and elegant element to your counter top - and won't blunt your knives.

Cared for correctly, a totally bamboo cutting board will last for years - which makes them not only eco-friendly but cost-friendly too.

Bamboo Wood Cutting Board

A bamboo wood cutting board won't absorb moisture, in the way that a standard wooden board will.

Neither will it color or retain food smells - more so if you follow the bamboo care guide at the base of this article.

Providing that you correctly sanitize your board, it won't cross contaminate between different food groups.

The best selling board on Amazon is the Wüsthof Bamboo Cutting Board - though do be aware that it's a relatively small sized board and more suitable for chopping/slicing small food items.

If you'd prefer something larger or over-sink, then you'll be better suited with the Lipper International over-sink board.

It's a whopping 20.5 x 11.5 inches. Big enough to cope with all manner of food preparation.

Pinzon Sanktu Bamboo Board And Knife Set

The Pinzon Sankotu bamboo cutting board and knife set is a fantastic deal for those looking to buy a board. The knives are purposely complimentary and the board is a good size and of good quality.

Highly rated on Amazon and one of the top selling in the catergory.

Totally Bamboo Cutting Boards

Totally Bamboo cutting boards are a big hit in the countertop kitchenware department.

They're cut from Mosa bamboo, that's organically grown and goes through an environmentally friendly production process.

You have no worries or concerns in relation to pesticides, fertilizers and other noxious chemicals, plus the whole range generally has a budget friendly price-tag.

The company reminds us that bamboo is more than just an earth-friendly material. It's also naturally anti-microbial.

Totally Bamboo boards are a simple and easy to care for as any other of the selection shown here, plus they offer some great priced boards at more than reasonable prices.

Going green isn't always as expensive as you'd think!

Large Bamboo Cutting Board

If you're looking for a large bamboo cutting board, Amazon won't disappoint.

Great for all purpose food preparation, a larger sized board allows for more room and less mess.

Smaller boards are generally better for lightweight food prep, such as slicing up fruit or chopping herbs and spices.

Some of the larger sizes will comfortably fit over the sink space, which is great for those with a smaller, more compact kitchen.

The best selling belong to the Totally Bamboo brand name and have already been featured but the ones to the right range from budget prices to the more expensive.

But - you get what you pay for. Large bamboo cutting boards command bigger prices!

Bamboo Butcher Block

A bamboo butcher block is the big daddy of the cutting boards.

Better for the aspiring or consummate home chef, a butchers block will take care of a broad spectrum of culinary arts.

Extremely durable, they're built for some serious home cooking. From chopping cuts to meat to paring, dicing and slicing, a butchers block will withstand a lot of hard work.

Carefully looked after, they will last just as long as any other type of bamboo cutting board.

By far the best selling is the Totally Bamboo Congo Parquet End Grain Cutting Board, which was rated first class by America's Test Kitchen.

On the whole, a bamboo butchers block will deliver and, just like the Totally Bamboo motto ... if you want to do the world a favor - do bamboo!

Bamboo Cutting Board Care

Bamboo cutting board care is a relatively simple process. Any board that's cleaned and oiled on a regular basis will retain its functionality and aesthetic appeal for years to come, should you employ the following:

  • wash in a mild detergent
  • don't place in dishwashers - hand wash only
  • a periodic oiling will preserve it - simply wipe the entire board over with a mineral oil
  • oil your board prior to its first use
  • a little heat will be of benefit. Once you've warmed the oil, rub in with a cloth then allow it to soak for 15-20 minutes before wiping away excess oil
  • only use mineral oils. Other oils (vegetable for e.g) will tarnish and ruin the board
  • to sanitize, simply wipe with a water/hydrogen peroxide mix. Rinse thoroughly after

Bamboo Facts:

  • it is the fastest growing plant on the face of the planet
  • its growing season is around three to four months per 12 month cycle
  • it can be grown, left to mature, and harvested three years from planting
  • it can be used in textiles, medicine, clothing and construction
  • bamboo is around 16% tougher than maple
  • it can grow up to 48 inches in a single 24 hour period
