Which is the best Profession?
88At a book launch
Jobs that are more play than work
1. Artists: Illustrators, writers, musicians...
2. Sportsmen
3. Sensual Jobs: Food taster, bed tester, sweet shop keeper...
4. Advisors: Agony aunt, Motivational speakers...only when you like doing it.
5. Librarian or Book shop keeper - if you enjoy reading, that is.
and other professions like these.
How do you define best?
By best, do I mean the most lucrative, the most pleasurable, the most useful or what? 'Best' means different things to different people. The best profession for me would be something I would do if I had to pay for it! Since I'm an illustrator and a writer, I don't work for my living; I play for my pay! So my profession is the best one, according to me: Writer and Illustrator.
My attitude is this:
Suppose you tell a fellow that you'll pay him to run about in an open field where there is a likelihood that he'll get hurt or ask another to sit in one chair and stare fixedly at changing images. Strap someone else to a seat of something like a centrifuge and shake him about wildly...all these chaps would complain about employee cruelty and refuse to work. Yet people play football, go to the movies, and pay for amusement park rides. We are funny, aren't we? When we consider it work, we grumble. When we think it's fun, we have a great time!
Let's look at other aspects, to be impartial and logical.
Other factors
Apart from money, service and pleasure, there are many other factors, too. 'Best' is a relative term, more relative than your Cousin-in-law Bob! Like these:
1. Jobs that get you fame.
2. Jobs that are educational
3. Jobs that involve doing something that comes naturally to you.
4. Jobs where you are treated with respect.
5. Jobs that are easy to do...and so on, depending on the seeker's personal priorities. I don't exist in a competitive world, and I won't look at other people's jobs. My job is the best one for me because:
I love reading and writing and drawing; my job gives me pleasure.
I work at home; I remain close to my family, pun intended.
I do something that comes naturally to me, which also implies the next one.
I have a soft, easy job.
I can look forward to being famous one day.
I can make a lot of money one day; I see that possibility.
Mine is the best job! Now, I didn't put that up to brag. I want everyone to be able to stand up and say, "Mine's the best job!" If you have problems saying that, quit your job or learn to like it. Everybody should feel proud, happy and satisfied with their respective jobs. That's my attitude. Cheers!
Jobs that are lucrative
Whatever earns you big money. For many, money is the key. The best profession is the one that earns you the most. Most leaders of their professions earn the most, so this could be true of almost any profession. I'm not going to list them all.
Jobs that serve humanity
Some would consider jobs that contribute to the welfare of others are truly 'best' jobs. Almost any service would fit the bill. The areas below are where these jobs are to be found:
1. Social Service
2. Agriculture
3. Health
4. Transport
5. Hospitality
6. Clothing
7. Catering
8. Education
9. Sanitation
10. Energy
11. Media

Yes, Earth Angel, you are one of those who have the best profession because you feel that you are blessed! Yes, a Life Skills Coach is also blessed! Thank you!
Great hub. Gave me something to think about. i have to say that I really enjoyed being a custodian. I found it to be meditative which led me to be more creative on my own time. Also, there wasn't a whole lot of competition and nothing beats a sparkly floor.
I've always advised my children and grandchildren to do what they enjoy doing. If you become really good at what you enjoy, you should be able to make a living at it. Personally, I've always found it's more important who you work with than what kind of work you do.
Great Hub Kenny! Very inspiring! Btw, you are famous in many eyes!
I'm loving my Job although i would love to work in the "Sensual" category too. lol :)
Kenny! Most people spend at least 8 out of 24 hours working. Thats a third of our day. If you hate your job, you hate a third of your life. The average worker works around forty years of his life. That would average out to being dissatisfied for 13.34 years of your life. Wewww! How many lucky people are there in the world that love their jobs???
Great thought invoking HUB
regards Zsuzsy
Thank you, dear hubbers, for visiting my hub and leaving nice comments for me to wake up to.
Good for you, Cathanne!
You are a lucky one to have a meditative, creative job.
That way, we are a sparkling floor, too!
William, point noted. Whom we work with counts, of course.
Compu-smart, delighted that you are inspired, and thank you.
I feel famous now! Sure, sure, you would enjoy a 'sensual,' job, wink, wink!
Ah, Zsuzsy, that's a sensible attitude. If people want to be lucky with their jobs, it would call for a shift in attitude or the job itself. Thanks for the bonus thought, and the compliment.
Job satisfaction is really a must.If you like a job you feel at ease with it,and it helps in the long run.Great write-up!Thumbs up!
Yes, Abhinaya, we must look at the long term, and choose wisely, as you said. Thank you for that short poem:
Great write-up! Thumbs up!
To me the job isnt as important as being happy while doing the job. Although the money helps. But not the end all. It also depends on how many bills you have as to how important the money is. Christmas time is time when money melts away without seeing where it goes. Even when being careful. Good hub
Absolutely right, that's exactly my attitude. Thanks for sharing.
This is my thought on the subject.
I am going to let Aristotle say it.
"We are what we we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit."
Thank you for a good hub
Thank you Frank and Aristotle for adding value to my hub!
Yes indeed the best profession is when you are doing what you enjoy most and getting paid for it! I guess that's why I "abandoned" dentistry when I heard myself praying out loud "please don't let the patients come today!" hahaha Great hub Kenny. Thanks for making us ponder about our profession.
I dread seeing the dentist, but now I realise the dentist could dread seeing me! Though I think I would look forward to it if you were my dentist, Michelle!
Thanks for the visit and comment.
Great hub. Another excellent work Kenny. Best regards.
Thank you, Cristina, God bless you!
That would make a great chidren's story Kenny! The Storyline: the artist dreaded seeing the dentist, who dreaded seeing the artist. (Now my head is getting mixed up). hahaha May our "work" bring us joy, Thanks for making me smile today.
I don't know if you are joking, Michelle, but that is seriously a good storyline. May I use it? I'm also a writer. Don't sue me! Please.
Anything to make you smile every day!
Hello Mr. Kenny,
Good piece of work.
Thanks, Mr Prince, welcome to my hubs!
Yes, I totally agree about your choice for best profession. I am a picture book writer myself (just in the process of pitching my first books to publishers) and even though I haven't seen a paycheck yet I find it incredibly rewarding. It's like I never have to grow up. I would love to know which books you have illustrated as I always enjoy exploring new children's books. Keep up the great work!
Hello Kenny. You may use the inspiration / idea :-) I would be excited to read it. Maybe even before it gets to be published. Wow, Wouldn't that be great?
Thanks, Rachelle, and great that you write picture books! Yes, we never have to grow up! Hope you have lots of fun, luck and money in your chosen profession!
Since I have been doing this since '89, there are many of my books around. Please check these hubs for three of my books:

Hi Michelle! When I write that story, I'll send it to you first, of course! Much before it's published!
Thank you Kenny! Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas, Rachelle!
Great Hub!
Keep on doing the good work!
I think the best job for a person is that which gives satisfaction!!
I could not agree more,This is a secrete too many people in life. They wonder and struggle along as I watch,I try to get them too uderstand do whats best for you not whats best for someone else,I found what was best for me early in life I however didnt know that until I got older and I felt so blessed mine is pysical work that was best for me thumbs up brother!very deep hub good job.
Thank you, Nash! Absolutely right!
Brother Paul, thank you for the appreciation and kind words.
Its nice to know that someone else loves their profession as much as I do. I love my job, I dislike a lot of my co-workers. I say this because they loose site of the greatness of our profession. We help create books. What I ask you could be better than that!?!?
I do wish people either love their job or seek another. If they can't, atleast learn to like their jobs!
Thank you, Abowie!
Job satisfaction can be a double edged sword. Complacency rears its ugly head and we miss a window of opportunity for growth in another position.
Thanks for sharing an excellent list of options along with your well researched tidbits of wisdom.
Complacency is a risk, but better be satisfied and content, if the other option is to grumble.
Thank you, Doc!
Hey,its a good hub to read. Nice topic u have choosed.Btw i prefer jobs which give fame, money, satisfaction. Sometimes even money gives us satisfaction in our life. Is'nt it??
As long as it is a tool that gives one happiness, fine. You take care of your skills; money and fame will follow. Victory to you! :)
very lame and stupid.......
Sorry, Diana, if that's how you feel! :)
The best profession in the world is the profession which you like the most. A perfect example is a friend of mine who is an Engineer by training; but is working as a moderator for an IT compaany.
Another examples are those who pimp themselves on youtube and make a profession out of it. Jeez, I could never do this (even if I had the talents for it)
Here is an article about Youtube pimping (as I like to call it) : http://www.pichi-pichi.org/entertainment/music/you
Absolutely right. Exacrly what I believe in. Thanks for the link, Winston.
Thanks for agreeing Kenny. :D It really is true actually. I studied as a Mass Communications student, yet I loved research. So now I'm a content researcher for an IT company. I love reading and researching about stuff...
You are in a great job, and in the best profession, then! :)
I know alot of doctors who work as writers and poets now! they studied medicine for 6 years and finally didn't work as doctors! It's what u really enjoy doing and what u can really do, makes u feel in the right place for u..
Some ppl who really like science and medicine for example...u think they r in love with scalpels and stitches! they just love to explore the human body either by cutting or trwating it with medication, psycologically , etc... It's all about what u r best at..
thnx, rated up
Absolutely! Thank you for that neat reflection of my views, Mezo!
Teaching, according to me, is right up there on the list. No, I am not a teacher, but if I could live life again, I would opt for it. There is no greater joy than imparting knowledge to young minds; it's like nurturing young plants and helping them grow into towering trees.
As a freelance writer-editor I have one of those 'more play than work' jobs, which thanks to my innate laziness is often 'more play and less pay' as well...but I have no regrets! It gives me the freedom to choose to work when I want to work and what I want to work at!
You could try teaching something in this life, if you really want to, Muser.
Just become a bit lazier and invent an efficient way to earn yourself more for less work, Feline! :)
Maybe I will, when I am through with my present commitments, Kenny.
Great! All the best, Muser!
I thing all professtions are best if a person choose them according to his intrest and Abilities.
That's right, Rajjab! :)
I dnt like to term smethng dat i love to do as a "job"
Terms are for other people, Prateek, you just continue to have fun!
