iHome - Bicycle Speakers for iPod

Take those headphones from your ears
OK, so you want to listen to your favorite musics while you ride your bike but you hate headphones (or you think they are too dangerous when riding a bicycle)?
Then you came to the right place. Here you will find a couple of solutions to be able to hear music while riding your bike and at the same time be able to also hear what is going on around you on the road.
When I was making my last hub about the iBikeConsole I realized that many of you should prefer listening music while riding using some kind of portable speakers over the headphones solution.
After some research I found out iHome™ products from where you can choose two different speakers to use on your bicycle, the iH20W and the iH85B. Both of them accept almost every type of iPod (you can check compatibilities on their manuals).

iHome iH20W speaker
This speaker was design mainly for using on the shower or on the shore but because of its water-resistant character it can also be used hanging from your backpack or even strap into your bike. This way you will have a much more multivalent portable speaker.
The main problem of iH20W it is the fact that it does not have any remote control which makes it almost impossible to change musics safely while riding.
It comes with an AC power adapter for charging the iPod and it works with 4 ”AA” batteries. One good thing it is the small dimension of the iH20W: 4" (10.16cm) W x 9.7" (24.64cm) H x 3.7" (9.4cm) D.
You can download the iH20W manual file (.pdf) HERE.

iHome iH85B bicycle speaker
This one it is the real thing if you are looking for portable speakers to only use on your bicycle. The iH85B was designed specially for bicycle use and it comes with a useful remote control which already brings 2 CR2032 batteries included. It also needs 4 ”AA” batteries to work and you can charge the iPod with the included AC power adapter.
One can attach the iH85B both to the handlebar or to the bottle cage of the bike. These operations are very easy to perform and are well explain on the manual.
Even though the iH85B seams bigger than the iH20W it is in fact a bit smaller: 3.2" (8.13cm) W x 9.4" (23.88cm) H x 3.2" (8.13cm) D. All this makes it almost as it was part of your bicycle and soon you will only remember it is there because of the great music you are listening.
You can download the iH85B manual file (.pdf) HERE.

cool discovery funride
That´s right Bob, and it looks like lots of fun too ;)
Hi anime_nanet, thanks for passing by.
Funride! What an awesome gift idea. I was wondering what to get my nephew. I'm off to the city next week to find just these type of speakers... the big ones just like the ones on the vid, Just kidding (wouldn't my nephew just die of embarrassment with all that clutter on his new mountain bike)
But I'm really thankful for your hub because I really didn't know what to get a 16 year old... I also will share that video with him just for fun
regards Zsuzsy
Hi Zsuzsy, it´s always a pleasure to read your comments, thanks ;)
I´m glad you found this hub helpful and I´m sure your nephew will love the video and specially the speaker for his iPod.
I and my significant other are heading to Arizona this January for sightseeing, hiking and biking. (Okay, and to escape the Minnesota, deep winter blues) What a great item to add to the bikes! Thanks!
Hi Akeejaho, nice to know you´re going to have a warm and fun January :)
I´m sure you both will enjoy riding and listening to your favorite songs. Have fun!
Very informative hub. I'm getting older and now live in the city, and am reluctant to wear my iPod buds, and I rely on hearing traffic noise for safety. These suggestions are excellent. I may start getting in shape with one of these!
THanks!
Hi Bruce, I´m glad you liked it. What better way to get in shape than cycling and enjoy good music at the same time!?
Have fun, enjoy your rides ;-)
I like the vidoe speakers. Makes as much sense as some of the smaller car sound systems I've seen.
LOL, thanks John. You´re right, some of those little cars with gigantic sound systems look pretty strange too ;)
The best speaker I found is the Lavod one...it also works as a front light which I think is good.
The ones you've shown seem a little bit big/don't have this multi-functionality.
Hi Thomas, thanks for showing me the Lavod MP3 Bike Speaker and flashlight. I never heard of it before and it seems like a good option, specially for those who don´t have an iPod or any other mp3 player. But you have to admit that US$152.30 or €112.90 it´s a bit too expensive, don´t you think? The flashlight feature it´s very nice though. Could you tell me about the kind of LED it uses?
I don't know what type of LED it uses I'm afraid. I don't think it is something you would use as your primary light. I think it's more suited to more overcast days and dusk, rather than riding at night with no street lights (but those sort of good bike lights cost around the same as the bike speaker).
You can get it for around £100, which for many people won't be too steep. It's a nice compact unit which I think is very important. I don't want to use it to get into town or something, then have this massive thing to carry around. The lavod is small enough just to stick in a pocket.
I've got anothe MP3 player, but not an Ipod so your iHome iH85B bicycle speaker wouldn't work. The other one is a bit of a bodge too...I made a DIY speaker and it wasn't really that good.
The lavod has had a bit of press in gadget mags and the gadget section of Men's Mags so I think there is a market for it.
If anyone reading this is interested in the Lavod you can find a bit more info about it on my site:
http://www.mp3-bike-speaker.co.uk/lavod-mp3-bike-s
Hope you don't mind the link... :)
Thank you Thomas, I´ll wait until Lavod become available on Amazon or ebay so I can add it here. Of course I don´t mind about the link ;)
