The Best Places to Buy a Mac

I had a regular PC for years but once I started using a Mac everything just seemed better. I used Apple computers when I started at Emerson College. I was a New Media major and Macs were perfect for design and video production. Apple computers are very simple yet offer better performance in many areas. The only thing they ever lacked was game play which was fine with me. But todays new Intel Mac's are just as good with computer games. I bought my first Mac in 2003. I bought the first 17 inch Powerbook and it has been working great ever since. I bought directly from the Apple Store which was very convenient because it was the first batch of the new Powerbooks and they were pretty hard to find. I also was able to use their educational discount since I was in college. Teachers are also offered the educational discount.

The initial cost of buying a Mac is more than a regular pc. But it seemed well worth it to me. I have friends that constantly need to keep up to date with virus and spyware protection. Their are some free pc virus and spyware protection but it is a lot of effort. Most people I know tend to buy Norton every year while I don't need to. A new Mac will come with OSX which has always been extremely stable for me. At work I use lots of PC's and constantly need to restart them when the computer or a program freezes.

After buying my Mac I have found better places to buy Apple products. If you don't care about price and want a specific configuration then by all means go through the Apple Store online. The Apple Store is very user friendly and easily allows upgrades through drop down menus. So you can get exactly what you want.

AppleCare

Applecare can be purchased to add 3 years of warranty protection. A new mac will come with one year of Applecare. If you don't buy it right away you can still decide to within a year of purchasing your computer. Applecare was great because it offered great phone support. I used it a few times to figure out connecting a projector and to fix my login items. I also eventually needed to replace my DVD burner. It wasn't faulty but my son thought pennies would fit nicely inside. I got the pennies out and the burner stopped working. I took it to the local Apple Store and they replaced it. AppleCare can also be purchased cheaper at some of the other store's I talk about below.

A Mac From Amazon

One of the best deals to buy a new Mac is through Amazon. By buying through Amazon you won't get charged tax and often times Amazon has rebates and includes free shipping. You won't be able to customize your Mac, but you can easily get a common model then add extra RAM yourself. Apple's RAM can be purchased a lot cheaper from other online stores and is easy to install yourself.

Refurbs

Another great place to buy a Mac is to buy a refurb from the Apple Store online. The refurbs are updated constantly. So if you don't see exactly what you wanted check back in a day or two. I did this for my grandfather's Emac and it worked out great. We saved a little over $100 and it looked as good as new. He loves the computer and can surf the internet and play Bridge online without any trouble. A Mac has such little maintenace it works out great for him.

A Mac with Extras

Some other good places are slightly cheaper than the Apple Store but offer lot's of extras through rebates and can allow some upgrades. These would be Macmall and Macwarehouse.

Smalldog.com actually offers various bundles that end up being cheaper than if you configure them yourself through Apple. they also sell AppleCare for less than Apple.

Craigslist and Ebay

I have found the best prices on Cragslist and Ebay at times, but they are constantly changing. You also need to be careful that it isn't stolen or defective. If you take this route you should get the Serial number and check it with Apple before you purchase your Mac. I would also try to find one that might still have Applecare and if possible try it before you take it home.

New Boston Apple Store

The newest Apple Store recently opened. It is located on Boyslton street. I wish I could make it to the opening. But I've got work, hopefully I can go sometime soon. It has 3 floors all dedicated to Apple. The first floor is computers. The second is dedicated to various gadgets like the iphone and various ipods. The third floor is taken up by the biggest genius bar.

Apple Display

Apple Cinema 30-inch HD Flat-Panel Display Apple Cinema 30-inch HD Flat-Panel Display

Apple Cinema 23-inch HD Flat-Panel Display Apple Cinema 23-inch HD Flat-Panel Display
Price: $899.99
Apple Cinema 20-inch Flat-Panel Display Apple Cinema 20-inch Flat-Panel Display
Price: $599.99

Mac Mini

A Mac Mini is a great way to introduce a PC user to Apple. The Mini is cheaper than other Mac's and if you already have a monitor and keyboard it is a smaller investment.

Laptops

For laptos Apple has a few choices and they are all pretty light and durable. The top of the line performance model is the Mac Book Pro. It can be used for intensive work like editing video, using large Photoshop files and playing the newest high quality games. If you need a portable desktop computer this is your choice. The regular Mac Book is great for everyday use. The Mac Book Air is the lightest and thinnest Mac their is. It can fit inside a regular manilla envelope. The Mac Book Air lacks a lot of the features I would need but it is the best wireless computer you can get. The optional Flash based hard drive is amazing but adds too much to the price for me. At that pirce I could get the heavier Mac Book Pro. If you need to carry a computer everywhere and don't need the CD-rom drive it could be great for you.

Hi Jim,

I absolute love Mac! I have been a convert of about five years now. LOL I would never never go back! Everything you said about a Mac is true. Very few problems - and never a virus:-)

We actually own a few Macs at my house now. These are some good resources that you provide here. I agree, I would never go to Apple direct for a Mac. You can find deals on Macs - if you look and are patient.

Jim, this is truly a wonderful hub about Apple Mac range of computers. This range is quite extensive and I think, that everyone could find the best option to suit him. I am a computer speed lover and I know that there is nothing faster than the Power Mac with two processors and loads of RAM. And of course, Mac 24" glossy screen to show the beauty of Mac Leopard operating system and other Apple Mac software.

thanks nadim313, I do benefit from making this hub just like all of my others. I am always very careful I only promote products I completely stand behind. These really are the best places to buy a Mac. I first put together the list of the places I regularly look for Apple products since I am a huge Apple fan. I always look at dealmac and see who has the best deals and those are the places I put here. I then looked to see if any on my list offered affiliate programs and then signed up for them and used their link instead of the one I had before. When I get a chance I will send you an email with some basics on how Hubpages works.

I went to my local MAC store, having made an appointment with a "Genius". We met at the Genuis Bar and he advised me on where to get a new battery, a place cheaper than any MAC store. Very Macys/Gimbles MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET of them. Nice experience. And all free!

THANK YOU for this hub! I'm still saving for my first MacBook, since I (succumbed to my art addiction) spent some of my Mac savings. Your info is invaluable. I was wavering and thinking, "Oh, maybe I should by a Windows-based notebook--they're cheaper"---but I am going to marshal onward!

Happy to help, I hope you enjoy our MacBook. I currently have an older PowerBook form 6 years ago and it still works great. I am trying to get my wife to let me get a 20 inch Imac to go with our new bigger desk.

I own a windows vista pc and I HATE it!! It has more problems than anything I have seen! It seems that about every 2-6 months I have to remove and install everything in order for it to work again. The tech supports are horribile!!

I have a question for you and I don't know if you can answer it. If I were to buy a Mac would my current softwares that I own now work in a Mac? I have like Roxio Media Creator 9, Adobe Photoshop Element & Prmiere softwares, Print Artist, just to name a few.

My husband is frowning on the Mac, but I know I will eventually win, for my next computer will NOT be a vista!!

Hi Sharon, a Mac will be a huge improvement and should get rid of all of your problems. The new Mac will come with ILife. Which includes IMovie, IPhoto and other helpful programs. If you need more out of IPhoto you can buy another copy of Photoshop Elements. I actually got a free copy when I bought an Epson printer. You also have the option of buying an emulating program like Paralell Desktop(about $70) or VMware Fusion(about $20). These will allow you to install your copy of Windows XP on your new Mac so you can use it on your Mac and then use any software you already own. You will be able to burn discs with OSX or for more complicated discs I love Roxio Toast. Good luck.

Thanks Jim! I will show my husband your comment and maybe he too will change his mind. All I know is I'm not happy with Windows anymore. They really have gone down hill!

I look forward to reading more of your hubs!

Your welcome Sharon. If you have an Apple Store around you should take your husband and you can both try one out. Good luck.

Thanks Kiran, I'm glad your son likes Apple Computers as much as I do and I'm glad I could help. You really can't be that bad with computers. You are able to write great Hubs and that is more than a lot of people. I would suggest adding Amazon capsules so you can add afilliate links on your book reviews. If you need help. Feel free to email me with the contact button.

That Boston store looks gigantic.

I want to visit there now :)

I have a Macbook, though I don't think that I'll ever buy a Mac desktop, mainly because I prefer building my own desktops.

Cheers!

When I grow up (and after we pay off some debts) I really, really want a Mac! Thanks for helping me on this journey.....a person can dream...

Thanks Glare, I can see that satisfaction in building your own desktop and the going with the Macbook for mobility works out great.

Thanks lefseriver, yes a Mac is typically more expensive but they easily outlast a PC because of their great quality.

hi Jim. I finally able to have amazon ads on my hubs. I realized its easy to just select on keywords then type products and then it will open up all products for you rather than choosing your own product , it is too much time consuming.

thank you very much for your great help.

now, as a friend of mine says, I have a best buy store right here on my hubs lol
