CHINESE JEWS RETURN TO ISRAEL

DISPERSION OF ISRAELITES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

God was angry with the Israelites and said, "I shall scatter them among the nations, and disperse them in the countries" (Ezekiel 12:15) for disobedience.

"And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries ..." (Ezekiel 22:15; 36:19).

The God of Israel did disperse the Jews to China and India, both of which are heathen countries. A couple of years ago, some Indian Jews returned to the Holy Land of Israel and now the Chinese Jews are slowly returning to Israel. This is a test pilot for the Chinese Jews of Kaifeng to return to the Holy Land. Solomon sinned against God by worshipping the strange gods of his many wives, resulting in God's wrath. God's covenant with Solomon is quoted In 1 Kings 9, "Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, ... 6. But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ... 7. Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight"

PROPHECY AND FULFILMENT OF THE GATHERING

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people ... ... and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth"(Isaiah 12:11,12).

It is confirmed by Jeremiah 29:14; 23:3 and Ezekiel 11:17. "I will gather you from all the nation, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive" (Jeremiah 29:14). "And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase" (Jeremiah 23:3). "I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel"(Ezekiel 11:17).

FULFILMENT OF THE GATHERING

Don McLaughlin, Director of Outreach, Bible Voice wrote on August 27, 2002 re Messianic News: "the Jews to return, (Isa. 11:12) and to the nations of the world to give up His people so they may return to Israel. (Isa. 43:5,6) In fact, the Lord Himself has even declared that the nations of the world will bring the Jews home. In recent days, Jews have emigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Argentina, Ethiopia, France, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Canada, USA, England, Germany, Austria, Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, Germany and India. In all, Jews from 20 nations have come back home in only recent months, and at a time when Israel suffers its most difficulty." Subject: NEWS FROM JERUSALEM - February 22, 2003

Chinese Jews- History of Jewish Community in China

chinese-school.netfirms.com/Jews.html

Archaelogical evidence suggests that Jews were in China as early as the 8th Century, having arrived from Persia along the Silk Road. In 1163 the Emperor ordered the Jews to live in Kaifeng, where they built the first Chinese synagogue. Marco Polo recorded that Kublai Khan celebrated the festivals of the Muslims, Christians and Jews, indicating that there were a significant number of Jews in China in the 13th Century.

Ming Emperor conferred on the Jews seven surnames - Ai, Lao, Jin, Li, Shi, Zhang and Zhao. To this day Chinese Jews will only have one of these seven names. Christian missionaries also recorded meetings with Chinese Jews. At least one synagogue was constructed, and the community was active for about eight centuries. Currently, the Vatican holds letters from Jesuits in the 18th Century describing the daily life and religious practices of Jews in Kaifeng, and drawings of their synagogue.

HISTORY OF KAIFENG

aish.com

In Chinese terms, the city of Kaifeng, about 500 miles southwest of Beijing, is reminiscent of the Israeli city of Hadera: The number of its residents is 700,000 – as opposed to Beijing's 15 million or Shanghai's 20 million – and it doesn't even have its own airport. However, a thousand years ago, Kaifeng was the capital of the Chinese empire, the largest, richest and most advanced in the world at the time, with 600,000 residents that made it the most populated city on earth. Ancient Kaifeng had a Jewish community – a small but thriving one, whose story is unique in the history of the Jewish people. For the 800 years of its existence, Kaifeng's Jews never suffered from persecution or discrimination. The Chinese authorities, as well as the general population, welcomed their Jewish neighbors, viewed them as citizens in every respect and allowed them to observe their religion with complete freedom.

It is only in the past 20 years that the descendents of Kaifeng Jewry, who now number about 1,000 people, have rediscovered their Jewish tradition.

In spite, or perhaps because of these freedoms, the community dwindled until about 150 years ago, when the assimilation and integration proved complete. It is only in the past 20 years that the descendents of Kaifeng Jewry, who now number about 1,000 people, have rediscovered their Jewish tradition. Some of them have considered undergoing proper conversion and making aliyah, and a few of them have done so already.

KAIFENG TORAH

A Jewish Diaspora in the Orient

By: Batsheva Pomerantz

The lure of the Orient attracts scholars, writers and tourists to unearth, record and experience its history and folklore. The history of its minute Jewish Diaspora also draws much interest, perhaps due to the survival of a community in isolation from mainstream Jewish centers for about a millenium.

Kaifeng Jews were actually discovered by the outside world by European Christians, not fellow Jews. Jesuit priests discovered the Jewish community in the 17th century. They reported that the surviving Kaifeng Jews observed synagogue practices and most festivals, abstained from pork, circumcised their sons and followed Moses' laws like Jews in Europe.

Prof. Xu relates that European theologians were quite interested in the Kaifeng Torah scrolls in order to solve a dispute raging in Europe. Certain Christian theologians accused rabbis of having removed or changing verses in the Torah. The retrieval of an original Torah scroll would solve the problem, and if the lost passages were found, would prove the rabbis had altered the Scriptures. Christian organizations bought six of the Kaifeng Torah scrolls - found to be identical with the Torahs in Europe.

THE CHINESE JEWS in 2010

Now it is the Chinese Jews who are in the news recently. Last year, Shavei Israel founder Michael Freund was able to clear with the Israel authorities to bring seven descendants of the Jewish community of Kaifeng, China to return to Israel. Shavei Israel means "those who return to Israel" is an organization that tracks down forgotten Jewish communities worldwide and encourages their members to make aliyah (immigrate to Israel).

Kaifeng is situated on the banks of the Yellow River and was home to a flourishing Jewish community for more than a millennium. When the seven young men arrived in Israel, they kissed the ground and went to pray at the Wailing Wall, which was left standing when the Romans sacked Jerusalem seventy years after the death of Jesus Christ. This is a trial project and if it succeeds, more descendants of the Kaifeng community will be brought back. According to Michael Freund, "It is said that every second one of them wants to make aliyah." The Jewish community now has 1,000 members. The Kaifeng Jews are mostly assimilated with the Chinese, but they still keep many Jewish traditions, they avoid eating pork, bake unleavened bread (matza) for Passover, and lit candles during the eight days of Hanukkah.
