Miniature pigs can make wonderful pets for the right person. Not only are they incredibly intelligent, they are fun, loving, and playful additions to the right family. Make sure you do your research before choosing to adopt one of these pot bellied mischief makers.

  • Choosing the right pig

Once you've decided that a pig is right for you, how do you choose the right one? If size is important, make sure you either purchase a pig over four years of age, or get a size guarantee from the breeder or rescue you are buying from. Some breeds don't get very big, but others can overtake your home quite quickly. When you choose a pig, you're committing to yearly vet checkups for many years. Be sure you can afford to keep a pig before you bring one home. Pigs also need structure and schedule. If you can't provide that, maybe a pig isn't the right choice for you.

  • Habitat

Pigs can live in your home if you aren't a clean freak. The same way you find a three-year-old child getting into everything and making messes, your pig will explore and help himself into anything he chooses. They can be litter trained or house broken, the same as a dog, but you have to be consistent. They need a place to sleep, a place for food and water, and a place outside. It's important for them to have outside time every day. Pigs love water. Give them water to play in. If having a manicured yard is important to you, don't invite a pig into it. They like to make mud and root around in it. Be sure to keep him and his area clean to promote good health.

  • Food

Miniature pigs need special food made just for them. Check with your local feed store to make sure they carry it, or can get it in before you bring your pig home. Follow the requirements for the size of pig you choose.

Over time, you will learn that pigs are very loving and funny, and provide years of entertainment. They are very curious, and demanding, so a pig will surely keep you on your toes.
