Introduction and Summary

On the surface this is a poem about the tragedy of losing someone that you love. More deeply it deals with the mistake of looking for something else when you should be satisfied with what you already have. Too often people are so busy pursuing happiness that they don't realize that they already have many things to be happy about in their life. Unfortunately, most of the time people don't truly appreciate those things until they are gone and it's too late.

A Forsaken Love Found at Last - a poem by Kelly W. Patterson

beside a stricken field, while the sun set
I stood by an open casket encased in stone
its inhabitant has finally cooled to my touch
as overhead a vicious night approaches

amid star-dust and vaporous lights up above
a thick gray shadow intrudes upon my thoughts
I came to the desert to quench my soul's thirst
perhaps it is then appropriate that it died here

my one true love lay upon her funeral pillows
clutching a black rose, immobile like a statue
will you ever awaken? can you hear the rain?
a dark storm is approaching like an ocean tide

even though your fair heart has turned to dust
the universe will keep your vibrations alive
many days I have grieved as you lay dying
now as I leave you I'm alone in my darkness

Thank you MFG!

Thanks Pachuca. Fortunately, people aren't limited to one chance at love. The key is to learn from past mistakes and use them to grow as a person.

When someone says they have a poem to read, I feel like making a cross with my fingers and crying "No, evil!" But yours wasn't bad. I like the gothic effects and imagery. Later!

That finality is hard to bear. But as time passes, the darkness fades, and even when the loved once voice has disappeared from memory, that love remains.

Thanks Kosmo, It's also not a bad idea to carry garlic and a wooden stake to ward off evil poets.

Very much true Dolores. We can always retain the good aspects of experiences, even if they are bad experiences.

I don't usually do the New Year's resolution thing, but I guess I should make it a goal to get more poetry online.

The art of losing isn't hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster. Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn't hard to master. Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster. I lost my ...
