The Coolest USB Flash Drives

Computer storage has come a long way in recent years. About five years ago I was stuck carrying around recordable CDs, Zip Disks and my very rarely used but extremely overpriced Jazz Disks. I also carried a Lacie portable drive but it was a little big and bulky. I was a New Media major and I always needed to store lots of files.

Today the choices are so much better. The price of flash memory is always going down. Back then it was very expensive for a flash drive. Today they are well priced and offer lots of storage. Their are new really cool ones coming out all of the time. I got my most recent flash drive for just the price of shipping. I found a great deal at Dealmac.com. Mine is actually in the shape of a snowboard. So it looks pretty unique too. Well basically this hub is to show some of the coolest flash drives I can find.

Strong Flash Drives

Today their is the right flash drive for everyone. If you are accident prone or quite a risk taker I would suggest the Corsair Survivor Drive. It should survive anything you throw at it.

Make Your Own Thumb Drive

If you want a really unique Flash Drive. Why not make your own. You can get a plain drive of any size then make a cover. I have seen some made from Pez dispensors, Legos and small stuffed animals. But you can probably make one out of anything you want.

I hope I have helped you find just the right flash drive.

Hi, I'm glad you liked my list. Their are so many different choices today when it comes to flash drives. And they are much more affordable now than just a few years ago.

I love that prices of USB flash drives are getting lower and lower and that their capacities are constantly higher. It is truly hard to choose in so great selection. Jim, could you tell us, which is your favorite type of 'USB key', here? Thanks!

I love the Star Wars R2DT but I would never pay $80 for 1GB flash drive. I currently have a 2 GB ACP Snowboard Flash drive. They seem to have low reviews on Amazon but I got it for just the price of shipping by using 2 rebates. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I found the great price through Dealmac.com.

If I buy a new one I would get the Kingston DTMFR/4G. It has great reviews, a good size and great price.

Jim, Star Wars are very cute, very expensive, yet challenging to have one R2D2. That little robot lies deep inside our minds as something very positive. I have one no-name 1GB and one Kingston DTI 4GB and they both work without any problems. Next time, I'll buy only a brand name and as fast USB as possible, because it is very easy to extend computer's memory by USB. That will be at least 16GB beast):

Yeah, it seems if you want a really cool USB Drive they are way overpriced. I'm not sure why, they are still just made from plastic.

This is a neat list. I graduated from Super Floppy to Zip to Minidisc (the 1GB version) and now to multiple thumb drives.

Speaking of thumb drives, if you've not seen it, here's a guy who lost his finger and had the docks make an interesting modification: http://gadgetblips.dailyradar.com/story/meet_jerry

I never tried the minidiscs but , a friend of mine swore by them awhile back. The finger replacement story was interesting. It would have been cooler if it was his thumb. But, that would have been harder to deal with.

This is a refreshing, fun hub, Jim. I like the idea of making a personalized flashdrive and think I will try the pez-drive idea. There are a lot of fun looking items on this hub.

Thanks Mythbuster, making a Pez dispenser into a Flash Drives seems very unique and it looks awesome. Just find your favorite Pez dispenser and make sure you eat the candy first.

Thanks JPSO138, I like how so flash drives are around now. You can get a large amount of space pretty cheap since the prices have come down. Some of the unique animal and different object styles aren't too bad. But, the popular characters from movies and TV are too pricey for me even though they look awesome.

Jim, at the risk of sounding as if I'm trying to be funny which I'm not. I have to tell you about the usb drive I bought as a present for my eldest daughter in japan. It has a dog on the end, and when you plug it into your computer, it starts to hump the computer at a frenetic pace!

Thanks Cindy, even if you are not trying to be funny that sounds like a very funny gadget. I'm sure your daughter will get a kick out of it. Hey do you have a link to it? I'm sure everyone wants to see it now.

Is it true that different brands or types of USB flash drives have different data transfer rates? I remember using my sister's Kingston and it took so long to copy files to it. I copy large files to my Transcend much faster. :O

jim10 profile image

jim10  says:

Hi Susan, yes flash drives can vary in speeds depending on how well they are built. the biggest difference would be an older one might only use USB 1 while newer ones use USB 2. Another issue could be if hers was pretty full. thanks for visiting. I will have to add some Transcend drives since they are better than some Kingston's.

I see. So how do I know which ones have fast data transfer rates? :O I've been looking for a good 8GB USB flash disk - one that performs well, is durable, but won't burn a hole in my wallet. :P  Is there one specific product you would recommend? :)

Hi Susan, I looked it over and it was the OCZ brand that did great ata reasonable price. I never heard of them before. But, they were faster than many of the Big brands like Kingston and Corsair. The Sandisk Cruzer was slightly faster but, at $30 more and easily scratched. The link above has the OCZ for about $30.

Susan Ng  says:

I've never heard of OCZ before either. :o I'll check them out. Thanks, Jim... much appreciated. :)
