Mind over matter is one way to get what you want

Feeling unsatisfied at work? Not getting what you want? Read this...

The grass is always greener on the other side.

This statement is true for almost all of us, especially in the workplace.

If you're getting frustrated at work because you feel like no one is listening, you aren't getting what you want, you are seeing other people get their demands met, and yet--- you feel like you don't exist and your feelings constantly get invalidated-- READ THIS ARTICLE before you make any sudden moves!

First and foremost, what do you want? I'm serious. Write it down, think about it, and make one simple and really clear statement about what you want at work.

Here are some examples:

  • I want a raise.
  • I want a promotion.
  • I want my boss to listen to me.
  • I want people to take my ideas into consideration.
  • I want a new responsibility or a new project.

And so on....

The reason why I'm telling you to write it down, is so that you'll have it in your mind as one clear statement, that you can do something about in a controlled fashion, so it won't come out in a moment of emotion as a blubbering, exasperated, whiny list if you end up getting so upset you throw a tantrum in front of your boss.

Your next step: Make a game plan.

How are you going to get what you want? Really, if you aren't getting what you want, its because what you want isn't going to fall into your lap, you have to do something about it.

Here are some ways you can get what you want at work (game plan tactics):

  • Schedule a meeting and ask. Make sure you bring concrete facts, lists, and reasons why you should get what you want. Make lists, charts, trackers, etc. Be organized and professional.
  • Ask your boss if they need help with anything. Always be willing to help no matter how menial the task is. This shows your boss you care, you will eventually turn into the person they lean on when they need something, and in turn, you will be more worthy of getting what you want.
  • If its a new project or responsibility you want, make suggestions. Say this new project gets brought up in a meeting. Share your insights. If the person working on the project already mentions something about it, try to work in the line " Oh, let me know if you help with that..."
  • Always show gratitude and always show interest and excitement. Whenever you do get new responsibilities, or someone gives you feedback, help, etc. Never forget to be super thankful, and always say things like " I am so excited to help you with [insert not so fabulous project here]" People respond better to those who are always positive.

Warnings and Tips:

  • Be persistent, but don't be annoying.
  • If you are just starting out in a position or career, do not ask for too much too soon, you need to put your time in.
  • Don't walk around feeling jipped because you deserve x,y, and z. If you want to keep your job, you need to realize that you are disposable, replaceable, and someone is always waiting to snatch your job up if you screw it up.

  • Be patient. You may not be getting what you want because your boss doesn't think you deserve it yet, so, work harder.

Oh and I would add that patience is really key, as you eluded to! Don't get this impatient, "everyone owes me everything" mindset!

Lady, Good advice. I think getting what you want boils down to two things: getting clear about what you want and taking focused action. Of course wanting without understand the Bible verse, "As you sow, so shall you reap" is useless. The Bible verse is just another way of stating the univeral law of cause and effect. You can want all day long, but unless you have earned what you want, you seldom will get it.

Most people never really get clear about what they want. Then very few people take focused action.

I was the manager of a jewelry mfg. co. for 10 years. and one thing I can say from my experience is be on time...do your job...be kind...be self conscience about your work....and don't steal...I was a fair boss and people got raises and time off and vacations  because they were good solid steady workers.  a boss needs to remember what it like to be the worker.

I started with the co. when there was only 3 employees..and we had 25 by the time I became the manager.  I knew the business inside and out...cause I had done every job I asked anyone else to do.

True that isn't how all jobs work..but sorta...you start at the bottom. G-Ma :o) hugs

Lady Luck - this is a really good Hub, full of solid, practical advice. You have to really know what you want before you can ask for it. Its one thing to be frustrated. Its another thing to be upset with good reason. Great job on a difficult subject.
