How To Make A Shell Necklace

Shell necklaces are fun and remind me of Hawaii. Remember those fun shell necklaces they give you at luaus? Some people think these are cheesy, but I think these necklaces are cute. This pink shell necklace is much nicer than the simple luau shell necklaces, so it is even something you could wear to school or work. To make this necklace I went to the crafting store and choose a flower shaped pendant with a tropical look. The flower pendant is mother of pearl, and some of the shell beads have a mother of pearl look also. The acrylic beads are light pink, small, and round. For this necklace I created a pattern, which gives the necklace a slight balance. Here are the supplies I used to make this beautiful piece of jewelry:

  • small pink acrylic beads
  • white and pink shell beads
  • a mother of pearl flower pendant
  • beading wire
  • wire cutters
  • jewelry pliers
  • a jump ring
  • a barrel clasp

This style of necklace is easy to make and something anyone with shell and small acrylic beads can create. You can also use small round glass beads in lieu of acrylic beads if that is your preference. Here are the steps I went through to make the Hawaiian themed shell necklace.

Here is the pink shell necklace I made for this project.

Step One: Add The Flower Pendant

Add the pendant to the beading wire.
Add the pendant to the beading wire.

Use the beading wire cutters to snip off enough wire to make a necklace. The amount of beading wire cut should be slightly longer than needed for the necklace, which will allow for extra wire needed for tying the necklace onto the barrel clasp. Next, take the jewelry pliers and open the jump ring so you can insert it through the hole at the top of the flower pendant. Use the pliers to close up the jump ring and make sure it is secure. Insert the beading wire through the hole of the jump ring, and now your flower pendant is attached to the necklace. Add one acrylic bead on each side to pendant to hold it in place, and then add a pink shell bead on each side. The pattern on each side will go acrylic bead, shell bead, acrylic bead, shell bead, all the way up both sides of the beading wire.

Step Two: Continue The Pattern

Continue the pattern on both sides of the necklace.
Continue the pattern on both sides of the necklace.

Continue the pattern up both sides of the necklace by adding one shell bead, one acrylic bead, and so on, which give the necklace a sense of balance. However, each shell bead is uniquely shaped, which will also gives the necklace a less uniform look. The acrylic beads are the spacer beads, which help us to remember that this necklace has a pattern, but the shell beads help give it a natural appeal.

Step Three: Keep Adding Beads

Keep following the acrylic, shell, acrylic bead pattern.
Keep following the acrylic, shell, acrylic bead pattern.

Keep adding beads to the necklaces following the acrylic bead, shell bead, arcylic bead pattern.  Here are some pictures showing what the necklace looked like as I continued to add beads.

Here the necklace is half way completed.

Step Four: Add The Clasp

Use the jewelry pliers to add the clasp.
Use the jewelry pliers to add the clasp.

The jewelry pliers can be used to attach the necklace to the barrel clasp. knot the wire to the clasp on both sides, and use the pliers to secure the knot. There are other methods for securing the clasp, but this is my preferred method. Try on the necklace and make sure it is secure enough to wear outside of the house.

Step Five: The Necklace Is Ready To Wear

The necklace is ready to wear and show off to your friends.  Have fun coming up with your own shell bead necklace designs.

How gorgeous is that!  That is a beautiful necklace.  I want one!  I used to make necklaces and bracelets all the time.  It's been way too long.  I never used wire, I was never quite sure about it and always afraid I'd end up cutting it too short, never knew what to use for clasping, etc... anyway, I really think I'm going to try this out.  I know my daughter would love it and her birthday is coming up.  Thanks for the step by step and the great pics.

Melody,

Glad you enjoyed the necklace tutorial.

Pete,

Thanks for doing that!

Nancy,

Is your daughter a hubber yet? I would love to read some of her ideas on crafting.

Frieda,

If wire is not your thing you can use beading thread and not put a clasp on the necklace. Just make it long enough to slip over her head, which many people prefer anyway.

You're necklace looks gorgeous! Thanks for this tutorial. I've been wanting to make one lately (since the flower on my last necklace broke and shattered), but I'm having trouble trying to find a pretty flower pendant. Any tips?

Also, I'm not sure if you've heard about this site, but if you like craft projects, and making tutorials like this one, you would probably enjoy this website --> www.cutoutandkeep.net. Warning: It's highly addicting.

Hi J Tully,

I have not heard of cutoutandkeep, but I will definitely check it out as you say it is addicting.  I have been looking for a good crafting site, and sometimes I visit the crafting forum on ning and craigslist.

I bought the pendant at Jo-Anns I believe, but it was along time ago, so I do not know if they have the same type now.  On their website I am sure they have some cute alternatives though.

Good idea. And probably easier. But I'd love to experiment with your way. I'll go by the list you provided at the beginning. She's going to be 10, so that should make a good challenge, we can work on one together. Think I may get the supplies beforehand and give those to her as a gift.

You certainly are the jewelery creation expert and it's a good craft to get into, my wife bought a make your own jewelry book, but has never read it, as it sits in the draw gathering dust and a feeling of lonelyness, but she does however like your hubs on the creating jewelry and it has renewed her interest on the subject!

Great hubpage, I like sea shells, you can add them to allsorts, picture frames is my own favourite!!

waynet,

Yes the shells are so much fun. When I was in Hawaii a craft vendor even glued them to boxes, which is another use. I hope your wife is having fun getting back into jewelry making.

Hi Rgraf,

I am funny and my reason for liking shells is because these remind me of the Pacific Islands, a place I love to read about most. I have been to Hawaii, but I would love to see all of the islands one day.

Hi Anamika,

For a time I just did not wear much jewelry, but in my late twenties I started getting back into jewelry making and wearing it too. At least you know what your friends would like if you decide to get them a present.
