Why Do Hubscores Go Up and Down?

The hub score is a ranking from 1 to 100 that hubpages assigns to each article published on its site. The hub score is an internal system meant to rank hubpages based on quality and originality. The higher the hub score, the better the article is in the eyes of hubpages.com.

A fuller discussion of how hubpages are ranked can be found here.

The hub score that is assigned to any article is based on a number of factors including the originality of the content, how many people post comments, how many people give the article a thumbs up and also how many visitors it gets. The more popular hubpages get more traffic.

When you first publish a hub, the hub score is generally low (around 50) and then the score goes up or down as the system analyzes the content of the page, and other factors come into play such as whether people give it a thumbs up or post comments on the article.

If you look at your article on different days or even at different times on the same day you may notice that the hubscore has fluctuated and goes up or down from the last time you checked. The reason is that the hub score is not like a final exam mark; it is a dynamic ranking of your article based on a number of criteria. To use just one example: if you get a lot of traffic from the search engines then your hub score will increase; if the number of visitors to your site falls so will the hubscore.

Another factor influencing the hub score is its relative quality compared to other articles. Let's say you publish a hubpage about Low Fat cooking that gets a hubscore of 75. Then someone else also publishes an article about eating healthy and for a number of reasons, the system determines that the second article is better than yours. In that example, the system will not only assign a higher hub score to the second article, but your's will drop.

Incidentally, the same thing happens with respect to your personal hubscore. It goes up or down depending on a number of factors including the quality and hubscore of the articles you publish. But you cannot rest on your laurels after you achieve a certain score; if the relative score of your articles goes down, so will your personal author ranking.

nice presentation. I think one more factor you forgot to enlist and i.e. how much you do participate in hub activities like comments on other's hubs, postings in forum, visits to other hubs, frequency of your visits to hubpages, updating of your hubs etc. However, most of these influence your personal hub score rather than the hub score.

Thank you for your explanation of this process. I still think it is more random than that, but maybe it is simply "man vs. machine."

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments.

On doing further research it appears that I left out one factor that causes hub score fluctuations: some scores go up or down because of randomly! I have no idea why, but we have it from hubpages itself:

On a recent post in the forum, pauldeeds, who writes the software behind hubpages said, " One small factor is intentionally assigned completely at random in order to induce some fluctuation into the score. We want the scores to move a little. We also don't publicize every single component of the score, since we don't want to make it easier for or to encourage people to try "game" the system."

I found this, cuz I'm trying to figure out why my hubscore has gone down to 90 when I'm trying everything to get it up to 100...It's going down!!!!

Do you know any tricks to make it go up?

quotations profile image

Hi dutch84 - I have noticed that my hubscore will go down when I haven't posted in a while, but even posting on the forums seems to increase it. And then of course the more comments you get on your hubs the better. So thanks for posting.

Good info. Any thoughts on why I have a high personal hubscore and my article scores are falling?

quotations profile image

quotations  says:

Hi Bueller's Way, thanks for the comment. From what I can tell, the personal score is not affected entirely by the score of your individual hubs. It is possible to have a personal hubscore that is higher than your individual hubscore.

In my case, my score is in the 90s, but most of my hubs are below 80.

How is this possible? I have noticed that my personal hubscore goes down when I have not posted any articles or comments for a while, but goes up if I participate in forum discussions, and when I post a hub. It also seems to go up the more fans and comments I get. These activities do not influence the hubscore or individual articles but they affect your personal hubscore. Hope this helps.

I had a hub score go down to 9 today I have never seen that happen. I checked to see if there were any hubs on this subject on hub pages and there weren't but as soon as I posted it . The thing dropped to 9. I have no idea why.

Enjoyed your hub.

Thanks for the comment Moonake. Sometimes the hubscore for an article will drop all of a sudden because someone has copied your article and posted it elsewhere on the internet. This happens quite often, as there are a lot of blogs and websites that like to rip off hubbers by copying their work and claiming it as their own. As soon as your article or a significant portion is copied, your original hub is penalized for being "duplicate content" and your hubscore goes down. This is because the system does not seem to be able to take into account the fact that you published yours first and in essence punishes you for "copying" yourself.
