What is an emergency contraceptive pill?
An emergency contraceptive pill is a safe and easy way to prevent an unintended pregnancy from occurring after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
What is i-pill?
i-pill is an emergency contraceptive pill manufactured by Cipla. A single dose of i-pill provides a safe and easy way to prevent an unintended pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
When is it appropriate to use i-pill?
If you have had unprotected sex and want to prevent a pregnancy, you should take i-pill as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.
i-pill is useful as a backup birth control method under following circumstances:
- Contraceptive failure
- Unprotected sex
- Improper use of your regular birth control method
- Forced sex
What are the directions for using i-pill?
i-pill is a single dose tablet to be taken orally. It should be swallowed with some water after a meal. i-pill should be taken as early as possible and not later than 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
When is it not appropriate to use i-pill?
i-pill will not work if you are already pregnant because it is only a backup or emergency method of contraception. It is not a substitute for regular contraceptive methods. i-pill will not be effective if taken 72 hours after unprotected sex.
i-pill is not recommended if you are allergic to levonorgestrel, which is the name of the medicine in i-pill
Who can use i-pill?
i-pill can be used by any woman of child-bearing age and is facing the prospect of an unintended pregnancy due to absence or failure to use a contraceptive. It can also be used in the case of rape or forced sex
Do I require to get a check up by my doctor before taking i-pill?
A medical check-up is not required for taking i-pill. However, if you are suffering from any serious ailment or have a known allergy to levonorgestrel, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
How does i-pill work?
i-pill can work in any of three different ways depending on where you may be in your menstrual cycle.
- It may stop an egg being released from the ovary.
- If an egg has been released, i-pill may prevent the sperm from fertilizing it.
- If the egg is already fertilized, it may prevent it from attaching itself to the lining of the womb.
It is important to note that pregnancy is established only after the fertilized egg attaches itself to the womb.
i-pill is ineffective if the pregnancy is established (i.e. the fertilized egg has attached itself to the womb). It is therefore not an abortion pill.
How is an 'emergency contraceptive pill' different from an 'abortion pill'?
In medical terms pregnancy begins once the fertilized egg gets attached to the lining of the womb.
Abortion pills contain drugs known as antiprogestins, which stop the development of a pregnancy after it has occurred.
On the other hand, emergency contraceptive pills like i-pill , which contain common female hormones prevent pregnancy in the first place and so do not cause an abortion.

How can I get the best results from i-pill?
i-pill works best when used as early as possible after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, but not later than 72 hours.
How effective is i-pill?
The sooner you use i-pill, the more effective it is. It is 95% effective within 24 hours of unprotected sex, 85% between 25 - 48 hours and 58% if taken between 49 - 72 hours . But if your periods are delayed by more than a week, you should go in for a pregnancy test and contact your doctor.
Will I experience any side effects from i-pill?
i-pill has no long-term or serious side effects, and is safe to use for almost every woman.
Nausea, vomiting and headache are some common side effects after taking i-pill. You might also have some lower abdominal pain or find your breasts more tender than usual. All this should stop within a day or two. There are chances of unexpected vaginal bleeding, but this is not dangerous and should clear up by the time you have your next period. i-pill might also cause your next period to come early or later than normal. But if your periods are delayed by more than a week, you should go in for a pregnancy test and contact your doctor. i-pill will have no lasting effect that may complicate future (and wanted) pregnancies.

Are there any warnings I should know about before I use i-pill?
You need to know the following things before taking i-pill:

How will I know if i-pill worked?
There is no concrete evidence or symptoms to know whether i-pill worked or not. After taking i-pill you need to wait and anticipate your next menstrual period at the expected time or within a week of the expected time. In case your menstrual period is delayed beyond one week, it is advisable to get a pregnancy test and consult your doctor.
Can I use i-pill for regular birth control?
No. i-pill is not recommended for regular birth control. It is effective when used as a backup method after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Make sure you do not replace your regular birth control pill with i-pill.
How often can I use i-pill or can i-pill be used repeatedly?
i-pill can be used more than once in a cycle but it is recommended only as an emergency contraceptive.
There are several reasons why i-pill is not a logical choice for regular contraception:
- any method of regular contraception is more effective than repeated use of an EC
- long-term overuse can cause irregular menstrual cycles
it can cause annoying side effects like nausea and vomiting
Make sure you continue to use regular methods of contraception for preventing unintended pregnancies.
What if I am already pregnant and use i-pill?
i-pill does not work if you are already pregnant. If you take i-pill while you are already pregnant, there will be no harm to you or your foetus.
What should I do if my menstrual period is delayed beyond one week and I have severe lower stomach pain?
Under such circumstances it is essential you consult your doctor immediately since this may require immediate medical attention.
When will I get my periods after I use i-pill?
Your next period should come on time but it may be a few days early or a few days late. However, in case your period is delayed by more than a week, please go in for a pregnancy test and contact your doctor.
Can I use i-pill if I am breast feeding?
i-pill is safe during breast-feeding. Using i-pill is unlikely to have any significant effect on milk quality that can affect the infant adversely.
Can I continue my pregnancy in case of emergency contraception failure?
If you wish to do so, you can continue with your pregnancy. The medicine used in i-pill will not cause any harm to you or your baby. In case you do not wish to continue your pregnancy, please consult your doctor.
How do I get i-pill?
i-pill is available over the counter at your local chemist outlet. You do not need a doctor's prescription to buy i-pill.
Controversy
The ipill has has already kicked of a controversy with many doctors expressing that it will have adverse effects on teenagers.This is only partly correct and the adverse effect of the progesterone which is the active content in ipill is only marginal and is of not much significance compared to the advantages..The content of ipill is essentially same as that of an oral contraceptive pill,with a higher dose.so the adverse effect is much the same as a OCP.But regular use has to be avoided as in the case of teens taking ipill regularly after sex with a condom to make ‘doubly’safe.

no it will not affect ur present pregnancy.ipill contains synthetic progesterone which does not harm an already implanted fetus.infact it prevents abortion if u already have an implanted conceptus.that is why ipill is effective for 72 hrs after intercourse only.you can continue your pregnancy without fear

it can be normal.But better be safe...do a pregnancy test as its cheap and u can always rule out problems like ectopic pregnancy(pregnancy in the tubes) or vesicular mole(an anomolous pregnancy that can be life thretening)...U can take the drug.It can relieve pain and also bleeding in some cases.

it most probably is not pregnancy..she may have delayed periods due to the earlier bleeding she had....Delayed periods can also be due to tension...how long did she have the bleeding...did any mass or clots come out...it may b a progesterone withdrawal bleeding which is pretty normal...

Thanks sanpnrad1.ur comment has given me some amount of relief...but well its been about 9 days past due now..and she still hasnt got her periods...do u think excessive use of ipill can cause a missed period coz she had 3 ipills in a span of 2 months.the bleeding lasted for 3 days, flow was similar to normal periods, no mass or clots and ther was mild blotting on the 4th day..plz advise asap.do i still hve reason to worry.coz im thinkin of making her take a home pregnancy test..and even if i do how accurate r the devices??

well ipill contains only synthetic progesterone...it wont cause much of side effects even if u take it for 30days a month except u wont have ur normal periods...
in ur case the second ipill will help the pregnany if the ipill had failed initially,which is highly unlikely...

polycistic disease is not a contraindication for ipill use..so dont worry...your physician can never find whether u took ipill or not...but its better to tell...so i recommend u go alone

since you had dark clots i recommend you go to a gynecologist..You can have delayed periods after taking ipill.But passsing clots suggests an abortion..

The ipill can work in your case and most probably it has...But there is no guarantee...since she had bleeding pregnancy is unlikely...But the vomiting and pain has to be investigated...contact a gynecologist

oral contraceptive pills are a more effective alternative to condoms..But if u have no problems it is better to stick with condoms...
side effects of oral contraceptive pills include---
irregular bleeding for the first few months nausea and vomiting weight gain breast swelling and tenderness increased appetite depression headaches scant or missed periods high blood pressure dizziness TO be ftrank most of these side effects dont occur..these are extremely rare..except an occasional weight gain..if ur girl friend has migraine,it is best to avoid these drugs...there are many brands available..not much difference in their contents...it is better to dtick to the mala-N supplied by the government..dont go for the advertisements..

Since you haven't inserted, no need to worry about it. Generally females get some gel type of thing as you males get after sex. So you both felt that gel as something else. Don't worry nothing will happen to her

You are absolutely in the safe side.As it happened in fourth day during your periods.Basically egg is not formed at that time because it's your bleeding time.Without an egg you can't be pregnant.Coming to your periods, they may be late because of the pill.Wait for some more time for your periods.

damn sure you are not pregnant, but i think that's a side effect of ipill to your body
oral sex doesn't lead to pregnancy, but then she has taken the ipill. so no chance is there of her to be pregnant. even if you have ejaculated in her, she won't get pregnancy because of ipill.

Hi, I had sexual intercourse without any precautin with my wife, on 13th Jan'08..She took Ipill within 72hours. She got her periods on 16th Jan'08 last for only 2days(PERIOD CYCLE-15th - 20th Every month).The flow was very less compare to normal periods. Again we had unprotected sex on 18th Jan'08 Night, she tuk Ipill on 19th Jan'07. From yesterday i.e 28th Jan'08, there was a blood clot at her vagina.even today morning there was a blood clot. hi sanpanrad we took a pregnancy test on 22jan ( last period on 8th dec and intercourse on 14th she took an ipill on 15th after that no intercourse she got a period like discharge on 19th that lasted for 3 days ) pregnancy test came out to be negative (she took it in afternoon) but today is 4rth and she did not get any period plz suggest we are worried should we check once more or is it normal
you are not pregnant...had an early periods...and so the next period is delayed..
u have nothing wrong..its actually how it should be...but some have problems...having no side effects does not mean you have a problem!!!
menstrual irregularities are a common problem of ipills..normally we expect a prolonged period after a short period..may be she had another short period..it can be due to the ipill..but i cant confirm.
22 days bleeding is NOT NORMAL and can be due to a variety of reasons,innocent and difficult...consult a gynecologist immediately...
there is no way she will become pregnant if u had sex during periods if she usuallty gets regular periods..dont worry
as you can see from the number of comments here,its normal to have menstrual irregularities after taking ipill...the tension after intercourse is the biggest reason for delayed periods..rest assured...some irregularities are perfectly normal.

i had unprotected sex wid my gf on 13th day aft her periods & blv me it was juz 1/4th penis inserted inside her Vagina. my penis was still dry uptil i took it out back. As i hvnt ejaculated inside, not even a drop. But for safety reasons she had took an iPill 2nd day on 23rd hour so that zero degree chances remain for pregnancy.
Now the pill effects she'd pass through is, abdominal pain once; 2ndly brownish fluid spot on her panty juz once it came & stopped (as its not continous like in period days)
She has migrane problem. But not any side effects seen other than described ones already aft dose of ipill.
So is there sumthing to worry about her health & How will it effect on her upcoming period??
ipill may cause a delayed periods..she has not even reached her normal dates..so why worry?
a two day bleeding and a three day bleeding doesnt make much difference.i can assure you with all certainitry that you are not pregnant.the bleeding on 26th was an early period due to the ipill..There is no chance that u can get pregnant after two concecutive negative tests unless some miracle happens.
you had an early period.count your next period from the date u had bleeding..
nothing to worry about..the brownish discharge can be due to a lot of reasons...dont bother about it..ipill can cause migraine,so better to avoid it..

ipill can caue heavy bleeding..if she gets bleeding for more than 7 days its abnormal..
ipill can cause all sorts of vascular headache...
the previous ipill can delay her next periods...also the ipill she took in this period can delay her periods esp if she took the ipill in the second part of her periods.
