A Mother's Gift of Love: Poetry, Quotes and Gifts for Mothers
73A Gift of Thanks for My Mother
As the season of thanksgiving approaches I have been spending some time writing about things that I am grateful for. The one thing I appreciate most in my life is the blessing of a dear mother who has loved, supported and cared for me throughout the course of my life. There is nothing in this world quite like a mother's unconditional love. This article contains a poem that celebrates and gives thanks for the gift of a mother's love as told through the eyes of a daughter. It is part of a collection of mother's poems and gifts of appreciaton for mothers that I am working on. I do not think I will ever be able to put into words the depth of my gratitude and love for my mother but this is one of my attempts to do so. I am forever thankful and appreciative of the blessing of a wonderful and loving mother. Orio mama (Thank-you Mother in the African Luhya language).

A Pot of Love
Narrative Poem About a Mother's Love
By Injete Chesoni
My mother has a pot
That sits over the stove
With multiple eyes
That watch my every move
A lot like my mother watches over me
It is an odd little pot that is quite eerie
One day I decided to ask my mother the story
behind her little pot of mystery
She sat at the kitchen table
And took me up on her knee
Then put the pot in front of us
And began to tell me its history
When I was a young woman
A little older than you
My mother came home one evening
With a package wrapped up in blue
She called me into her kitchen
And I sat on the floor
She gazed down at me
and handed me the package much to my glee
I tore off the blue wrapper expecting to find
Baubles or jewels of some kind
Instead I found this odd little pot
With scary blue eyes gazing up at me
My mother sensing my dismay
As I put the odd little pot away
Smiled her gentle smile
And said in her loving way
I know you don’t understand this gift my child
But you will one day
And on that strange note she rose
and strode over to the stove
To begin cooking our supper
I stomped out of the kitchen with my odd little pot
And tossed it in the corner wishing it would rot
Many years later after my mother died
Is when I finally realized
That the pot was her way of letting me know
She would always be watching over me
with a loving glow
Stored in the eyes of the pot
that she gave me so long ago.
I looked up at my mother as the tears rolled down her face.
That’s the end of the story she said.
I reached up for the pot
And caught her teardrops
As they slowly fell off her face
And for the first time
I saw the pot with different eyes
It was a pot of love
and a mother’s pride.
This is a poem of thanksgiving dedicated to my mother, Mary Aherwa Chesoni, for her love and support over the years. From a collection of Mothers Poems, Mother Daughter Poems, Narrative Poems and Story Poems by Injete Chesoni.
