The Olympus E-510 is a feature packed 10 Megapixel DSLR based on the maturing Four Thirds standard.

With 10 Megapixel the Olympus E-510 offers a high image resolution, resulting in superior quality images.

Even when printed in large formats (poster sizes of 16 x 20 inches or larger), images are consistently sharp and vivid.

On most DSLRs the LCD can be used only for menu navigation and image review.

The E-510 LCD screen is bright, fairly sharp, and can be used as a viewfinder, to frame and compose images. This is what is known as LiveView.

The metallic mount of the Four Thirds Standard stands out in the frontal of the camera.

The advantage of the Four Thirds System is that it doesn't limit to a brand of lens, any lens compatible with the standard can be used.

Four Thirds is a new All Digital format developed by Olympus and Kodak for DSLR camera design and development.

Four Thirds is not based on any existing film SLR system and uses a totally new lens mount, so all the lenses in the system are designed for digital.

Image Stabilization is a technique that increases the stability of an image.

The E-510 is the first Olympus DSLR to feature image stabilization, the camera detects shake/movement and compensates by shifting the sensor.

Image stabilization allows you to shoot at slower shutter speeds than would have been possible without Image Stabilization.

Nowadays, the back is the most important area of the digital cameras. In the Olympus E-510 we find:

• In the center the high quality LCD screen of 2,5 inches.

• At the left the line of buttons to see and erase the images.

• At the right the button for blocking the exposition and/or the autofocus, below the button to activate the image stabilization, and below the LiveView button.

• Four buttons located in circle around an OK button activate the white balance, the focus, ISO sensibility and light measurement. Underneath that is the connection for external devices, protected by a plastic cover.

The Olympus E-510 has a standard flash mount, with special connections for the Olympus flashes.

The camera also has an integrated flash.

Third party flash units may be used, but only in manual mode.

The Olympus E-510 features a Dust Reduction System that reduces problems caused by image sensor dust contamination.

The system utilizes a Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF) positioned in front of the CCD.

The dust that is captured by the filter can then be instantly removed by ultrasonic activation prior to shutter release.

This filter is activated automatically when lighting the camera, eliminating any particle that is stuck to the sensor.

The Olympus E-510 admits the xD Picture cards and CompactFlash. It is recommended to use high-speed Memory Cards.

Which CompactFlash? A big one. And bigger is better. An 8GB CompactFlash in your camera is preferable to four 2GB CompactFlash in your bag.

The SanDisk Extreme Memory Cards has good benefits, the images are recorded quickly and with the SanDisk FireWire Card Reader the images can be transferred to the computer.

One of the biggest advantages of the Olympus E-510 is that it lets you shoot your pictures in RAW format.

The RAW format produces a digital negative very much like a film negative. If you get the exposure wrong, you can fix it on your computer with no to very limited loss.

If you need an image without having to convert it, shoot in JPEG format.

With 10 Megapixels the E-510 generates files of large size, a RAW file (ORF or Olympus RAW File) has a size of 11MB easily.

To process the RAW files, Olympus includes the Olympus Master 2 software.

The quality of the glass in front of the sensor will largely influence in the DSLR image quality.

The Zuiko Digital lenses was designed specifically for the Olympus E-410/E-510. The Zuiko lenses are lightweight and very compact.

There are 17 of Olympus Zuiko lenses to choose from, ranging from fish-eyes up to a 300mm f2.8 super telephoto.

The E-510 is available in a kit that includes the body and two Olympus Zukio Digital lenses-the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 and the 40-150mm f/4-5.6.
