Interesting Space Facts

Any free-moving liquid in outer space will form itself into a sphere. This happens because of its surface tension.

Saturn's rings are about 500,000 miles in circumference but only about a foot thick.

The only married couple to fly together in space were Jan Davis and Mark Lee, who flew aboard the Endeavour space shuttle from September 12-20, 1992.

A 100-pound person on Earth would weigh 38 pounds on Mars. This is due to the lack of gravity on Mars.

The Earth's revolution time is increasing. It increases by .0001 seconds annually.

41% of the moon is not visible from earth at any time.

The largest volcano found in our Solar System is known as Olympus Mons. It is situated on Mars. Olympus Mons is 370 miles (595 km) across and rises 15 miles (24 km). It is three times higher than the Mount Everest.

Any space vehicle must move at a rate of 7 miles per second in order to escape the earth's gravitational pull.

If you weigh 100 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 264 pounds on Jupiter.

The temperature of the earth's interior increases by 1 degree every 60 feet down.

Jupiter rotates so quickly that the days are only 10 hours longer than Earth, despite Jupiter's huge size.

Rings of the planet Saturn are made up of particles of ice, dust and rock. Some of these particles are as small as grains of sand while others are much larger than skyscrapers.

If you are 24 years old, your age will be 2 years on Jupiter. As Jupiter takes 12 years to orbit the Sun.

The largest galaxies in this universe contain nearly 400 billion stars.

The biggest moon in the Solar System belongs to the planet Jupiter. The moon is called Ganymede.

A piece of a neutron star the size of a pin point would weigh 1 million tons.

There is a supermassive black hole right in the middle of the Milky Way galaxy that is 4 million times the mass of the Sun.

Moon is moving away from the Earth. Yes it is, at a rate of 2.5 cm per year.

When NASA's rovers scrapped the soil of Mars, it revealed patches of ice that quickly evaporated.

Saturn has the lowest density of all the planets in the solar system. It is so light that it could actually float on water if there was an ocean big enough to hold it.

A substance called perchlorate was found in soil of Mars according to NASA. Some microbes on Earth use perchlorate as a source of energy.

Galileo was the first astronomer to observe Saturn's rings but thought they were large satellites as he could not see them clearly with his telescope.

A day on Mars is half an hour longer than that on the Earth.

Many of the Saturn's known 30 satellites are small and faint.

Saturn is extremely hot and sends off more energy than it receives from the Sun.

Mars once had large amounts of surface water. Proof of this facts have been fund on certain valleys and canyons.

Because Saturn is a gas giant, interestingly parts of the planet rotate at different speeds.

In winter, nighttime temperatures on Mars can drop as low as -191°F.

All of the continents on Earth are wider at the north than in the south. The reasons for this phenomenon are not known.

Like Earth, the poles of Mars are covered in ice. The ice becomes thicker in the winter.

Saturn has a rocky core, but primarily consists of liquid metallic hydrogen.
