Upon a hill

I climbed one day

By accident

I found my soul

And recognized it

Instantly.

I could have

Just as easily

Missed it

And gone

Another way.

 Life astounds me!

How beautiful!

How full!

And here am I

To live it!

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

Life,

I accept

On its own terms!

Who are these

Rejecting it

And calling

Their rejection,

"Life"?

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

Lifted ~

I watch an earthworm fly

When I become aware of sky

And see the relativity!

Nor do I care

Just where

I'm found in it.

It is.

I am.

That is profound enough.

My tears are ecstasy!

If I told you my soul

                  And you

                      Answered me,

                              "Tomato bugs",

                                       I'd like it better

                                                Than Shakespeare

                                                               Out of context!

                 ______© Nellieanna H. Hay

Was I the one

Who thought of

This

and

That,

Decimals, digits,

Even rainbows rising,

Moonbeams falling

In the sea?

Was my awareness

Numbed

Or bundled into parcels,

Neatly labeled

To obscure

My desperation,

Vainly seeking unity?

Was that REALLY me?

Hello, hello - thank you so much. I would hope there is comfort or peace for you to be drawn from my poetry. It was written to give its writer what was needed during very trying times - and it did.

How is it possible for someone to be so gifted? If nature can be so generous in endowing you with inner as well as external beauty, why is she so mean to others?

But there is something missing. You should put dates to your poems and to your painting, because the times they reflect are important components to the work of every living artist (and for posterity so that that biographers will not led astray)

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 6 years ago from TEXAS Author

Billy, thank you! I appreciate that they "feel good" for you! Happiness is a state of mind and a choice - and it was mine when it could have been otherwise. The poetry helped me keep it nourished. Sharing is a choice too! :-> Hugs.

DG - Look who talks - you with such talent and charm! Thank you for the lovely compliments.

The dates were not usually noted on the copies when I selected my favorite poems from their notebooks in which I originally penned them. I'd be looking more for a kind of poem for selection, rather than chronology. Now it's from those more manageable & sorted collections whice I copied into those small "blank books" that I'm finding a few to put on the hubs. (I'm practically buried in those little books here by my laptop! haha)

But in general, many of the poems are from the 70s & 80s and many of the paintings are from the 80s, though not all.

Though both writing and drawing are life-long activities, I must admit that my writing tapered off as my life became happily fuller with "real" happenings when those I did pause to write were more "on the run" & so, more scattered.

My painting was really going strongly when it was interrupted by a decade of intensive ranch activities & travel - and then the internet and webpage design moved in & became my "art".

But it's the dynamics that make life fascinating. The tracks we leave are fun to retrace and see if they still fit - and often they do. We are who we are and that is unchanging, so the poems I select NOW fit in ways NOW. (Or they seem perhaps to be applicable for others going through similar times in their lives. Don't you agree?)

If any biographers should ever get involved, they can do all the tiresome research of ploughing through so many poems of no consequence in the chronological notebooks in search of dated excerpts! haha. And I'll stop playing online (as for the last 13 years) long enough to write some recent ones, perhaps!

You're so sweet to suggest I'd ever be biographed. hehe :->

Hello Nellianna Ma'm-I read every word of the poems and I think every one of them have a message about the inner peace of the heart that "feels", a lively heart.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 6 years ago from TEXAS Author

Suny - you've said in a few lovely words much I was trying to say in my reply above! A heart that "feels" and is a lively heart continues through passage of time! Thank you for reading and relating to these poems! I really appreciate it, knowing what a challenge it is to read and relate to poetry in a foreign language. But a good heart reaches across and yours certainly is one!

This is a collection of brilliant poems and is so very hard for me to say which one I like best.

Your soul is so present in all of them that would have been impossible for you to miss it even if you tried; just as it is impossible for us to miss the richness of your being.

This simple and really beautiful one speaks to me: Life astounds me! / How beautiful! / How full! / And here am I / To live it!

Joyful and affirming and so positive. I would love to put it on my profile page, with proper attribution and a link, of course. Would you give me permission? I would call it something like "an example of the great writing there is to be found on HubPages".

Love and peace

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 6 years ago from TEXAS Author

I'd be honored, Tony. You certainly may use it the way you describe.

The great majority of my poetry is affirmative. There are some of all my feelings in it because I believe in acknowledging ALL feelings -it's what makes them all authentic, but I've been most blessed to actually feel joy more than any other. Of course, a full life contains some of it all, though I'm very glad to have felt very little hatred and fury.

Thanks for your positive feedback. Tony!

Take heart my heart...so lovely this and the rest. You are a poetess of beauty. I loved all of them but being the romantic fool I am..the heart always always takes precedent. Because without it combined with our spirit and soul the true artist is left limp and living is lost and does not flow without the pulsating that the heart brings to our pen. Lovely, just lovely and Devine

I'm not really much of a poetry fan, to be honest. I don't read it but rarely, and usually than only an epic one because it's the sort of thing I need to know, but I have no trouble with yours. There are so few writers who put themselves out there as you do, and yet maintain dignity too. Especially in a place like HP, where there is so much that is simply melodramatic or sentimental (or really bad rap lyrics, ugh, I read one earlier and wanted to shoot myself). You have such grace in your meter, your use of the "page," and your candor that is not sentimentality, and you are funny: so you earn what we feel.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 6 years ago from TEXAS Author

THANK YOU. Talk like this could make me sentimental or melodramatic, but I'll try to act like I halfway deserve such a high opinion from someone whose opinion I highly respect! 'cuz that's the truth!

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 6 years ago from TEXAS Author

Wow - You're deep! Gray absolutes! I must contemplate that - you have described something so fitting today's world! Wow.

Thank you for the beautiful and special words of praise for my little verses! I feel sort of that way about them, they're a bit too frivolous or optimistic without being too unrealistic, perhaps, - being as I am, a bit of an iconoclast who doesn't always "get it" when gloom and doom try to crowd out everything but at the same time, understanding the G&D's basis a bit - and being enough of an agnostic to admit I know nothing whatsoever! ;-> . . . except that. . . You're so special!

Thank you, thank you for the visit and kind comments!

Sometimes your poems astound me, to where I feel perhaps they are above that which I fathom in my simple thinking, or can distinquish in my daydream state and random thoughts. I think that's what I like about them. They are unique and appear so wise, beyond anything my mind might put forth, or even comprehend at times. Like a wise scholar, in comparison to his simple student. I love your layouts and pictures. The way you pen your verse to coincide with another... all relatively. : ) Can't believe I missed this one. I was drawn in by the blue of your featured hub.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Dear lovely Gwen. Your words truly honor and humble me. Your own depth is what allows you to see what I was attempting to write in my poetry!

I don't ever want anyone to measure his or her own work by anyone else's, though, least of all - mine! Each of us has a unique gift and story to tell, and even during each of our lives, it varies and reflects what is going on and impacting our immediate world, and does so in our own unique ways.

As I re-read these poems (published here in one of my earlier poetry hubs, by the way, and many written around 40 years ago), it is like reading my personal diary. I can remember exactly where I was, what was impacting me and how I was responding to it all. In fact, many of my poems (if not all of them) were written/are written as a sort of diary or journal, personal to me, yet, hopefully - as it turns out - speaking to others. At the time, I had NO intention of sharing them with anyone; in fact I was intent on non-disclosure to anyone who might happen to read them, which would be uninvited. They were written, not to immortalize any of the unpleasantness, but to preserve my own true being in spite of it. You wouldn't believe the actual circumstances which were in progress, because my poetry is not a mirror for the "other" which is NOT who I am, if that makes any sense.

I confess, I'm a bit saddened when I read poetry which obviously reflects mostly the circumstances which are the antithesis of the poet's real being, in his/her obvious effort to be rid of it in that way.

In my experience, writing about those things would only have installed the sadness IN me, where the reality was still the joyousness which IS who I am. Of course, I didn't just ignore the circumstances or pretend they were not reality. I just allowed them to activate within me the strength and/or wisdom in reply to the circumstances, which many of my poems express, and which might never have been activated within me by only 'smooth sailing' circumstances. At least - that's my view of it - and I'm sticking' to it! haha.

I'm a creative person and have always just naturally coordinated various elements of things to be as 'pretty' and pleasant as possible. My mother wrote in my baby book that my first word was "pretty" - haha. So I truly love making hubs come together in eye-appealing - and other appealing - ways.

That blue for the title picture of this hub is one of my wild abstract watercolors. I just love those colors, too. Those are the blues I really like best. I'm delighted that it brought you here. This is only th 8th of my 155 poetry hubs! I love being drawn back to read it myself, along with the many lovely comments. Thank you now for yours from the bottom of my heart!!

dreamseeker2 3 years ago

Oh, my! - Same here, - about blue!! Before my hair turned silver, my colors were so much the "Spring" palette of greens, peach, and ivory, - with royal or 'true' blue being one of my worst colors to wear! But this 'electric blue' was always agreeable and remains my favorite of blues. I'm honored to have you 'in my unique world' and to be welcomed into yours!

Jamie, thanks! Seems like I needed a tonic myself to get into my Saturday, when I started out feeling drained & running a bit of fever. Even so, I've managed to get the lawn watered on my assigned day and within the allowed hours, by resting & napping in between moving the sprinklers around.

Now that's done & I'm chugging along, getting my fruit & coffee, feeling improved by the moment. I never have such negaative symptoms. Not sure why now, unless it's because of too much lack of sleep catching up with me. ;-) Anyway, I do thank you for the visit and positive comment. I needed that, so we've exchanged a boost on this Saturday morning!
