I Am A SuperHero

What does it take to be a SuperHero

Superman is the greatest superhero of all time.  He has been a part of popular culture for over seventy years now, and still adults and kids love him and what he stands for.  Each day many people from all around the world prove to be heroes in one form or another.  So the question to ask is, "What does it take to be a Super Hero?"

  1. You must uphold honor and values.  Similar to Supermans, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."
  2. You must save people from dangers without thinking of yourself.
  3. Finally, you have to have an abnormal or unique, power.  Such as flight, strength, speed, and etc.

Being Superman

In everyday life there are opportunities to be super and heroic, but fewer opportunities to be a superhero. Surely you could be a superhero at Halloween. What fun is that though, and what purpose does it pose? I am going to tell everyone who cares to listen what my super power is.

They call me Superman at work, but maybe only because of my Superman tattoo. I am really SuperDad. I often fly in like Superman to save the day. Whether the problem is homework, or learning to ride a bicycle.

When my children were born I vowed to God that I would protect them from every single evil I could. I will not break that promise. When my youngest daughter stepped in a fire anthill, she ran to me while those ants crawled up her leg. Being SuperDad though, I immediately recognized what was happening and rushed towards her, closing the gap, and brushing off the ants. She walked away with four bites on her feet only. Later on we moved out of that house.

I guess intuition is one of my superpowers. I can immediately assess a situation. If one of my daughters is screaming or crying I can figure out why in seconds. This ability comes in handy in most household situations. Cuts, scrapes, and other wounds heal faster in my presence also. I don't know why, I guess it is because of a father's love.

Superspeed has happened to me one time. My youngest was going to go swimming with my oldest daughter. My oldest can reach the bottom of the pool, my youngest cannot. Well, I was at the middle of the pool, which is a standard size hotel pool, and my wife was at the end of the pool that my daughter was at. I was watching, of course. My youngest got in over her head and went under. I saw this, figured out what was happening, and by the time she went under again I was pulling her out. All this before my wife could get to her. Not her fault, I love my wife very much but I was just faster that's all. My youngest can swim just a little. When she went under she knew how to tread water a little and got to the surface again. I knew she wouldn't be able to keep that up for long. She didn't have to. That was the only case of superspeed I have experienced.

As my daughters are both very young, 10 and 7, I have been able to save them from several things. As time goes on my abilities will lessen. I will not be able to save them from heartbreak, though I wish with all my heart that I could. I also will not be able to save them from most of life's let downs and pains. I hope that I remember what the true meaning of being a father is when those times come.

The true meaning of being a father is not saving them from everything that hurts. It is always being there to pick them up and tell them that its ok. By the way, being a father is the only kind of superhero I ever want to be.

This hub reminds me of the message that my dad wrote in my baby book (a photo album/scrapbook that my mother made filled with photos of me as a baby). He wrote something like "I will always be there for you and try to protect you the best that I can." Those weren't his exact words, but something like that. Anyway, you sound like a good dad!

You are indeed a superman in my book. It will break your super heart though when those girls grow up and you have to sit on the sidelines and let them choose their new hero over you. Great hub son.

Thank you

Dame: You're absolutely right, and thanks for the awesome feedback.

Ralwus: As terrible as this will be, maybe I can "help" them choose. Your praise is greatly appreciated as you are one of the great hubbers here.

Brenda: I disagree, being a good dad is "super" but the real heroes are the single mothers out there that do it all themselves every single day. My hat is off to all of them.

Blondepoet: Supergirl, cool. Thanks for the praise

Pink Dove: Thank you, I am as good a dad as I know how to be.

Maggs: Thank you very much.

You sound like an excellent father. You have a very lucky family. Being a soldier in Iraq is something akin to being a hero as well. Kudos!

I have a song called Superhero with the chorus "5-4-3-2-1-zero I wanna be your superhero now!"

You can watch me playing it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gxuyfc9AlBY

You sound like a great superHero to me. By being a good example you should be able to lessen the amount of later heartbreak anyway.

You are in Iraq because you are in the military right? Defending our counrty AND being a Dad puts you in a category beyond being a superhero!

And the Man of Steel says - this looks like a job for Superman, then he zooms off into the sky. Wow, great analogies in your hub. Loved it.

You are so wright girls need a superdad. One who will show them what's important in life, like how a wife and mother should be treated what they have to look forward to in life, and How to pick the wright person to spend the rest of there life with. How to trust and belive in another person. To know that they are belived in. it takes actions more then words to show some one you love them. yes that takes a lot of work but that what make you SuperMan to them.

Good topic. Sounds like you are doing a great job as a papa. The only thing I would add is: help them learn to be independent. My daughters baited their own hooks and had to be able to change a tire before they were allowed to drive alone. They called me names at the time, but 30 years later they think those kind of learnings helped them to become confident women.

Also, your service to your country is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It takes a lot of courage to be a superhero to your family. And it is all the more difficult when you are serving your country. My dad was in the Air Force for 20 years and the Air Force got him a lot more than we did. My sincerest thanks to you AND YOUR FAMILY for sacrificing your time with them to serve in the military. To be focused on your family and their needs too really underscores your integrity and sense of honor. You have my respect.

I think I read this hub once before and gave it a thumbs up. Shortly after, my little son was in need of a few t-shirts and I saw one that said "Dad is My Superhero." Now that one is his favorite. Cheers.
