I Am A SuperHero

Updated on August 2, 2009

What does it take to be a SuperHero

Superman is the greatest superhero of all time.  He has been a part of popular culture for over seventy years now, and still adults and kids love him and what he stands for.  Each day many people from all around the world prove to be heroes in one form or another.  So the question to ask is, "What does it take to be a Super Hero?"

  1. You must uphold honor and values.  Similar to Supermans, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."
  2. You must save people from dangers without thinking of yourself.
  3. Finally, you have to have an abnormal or unique, power.  Such as flight, strength, speed, and etc.

Super Hero

Everyone knows what this symbol means.
Everyone knows what this symbol means.

Being Superman

In everyday life there are opportunities to be super and heroic, but fewer opportunities to be a superhero. Surely you could be a superhero at Halloween. What fun is that though, and what purpose does it pose? I am going to tell everyone who cares to listen what my super power is.

They call me Superman at work, but maybe only because of my Superman tattoo. I am really SuperDad. I often fly in like Superman to save the day. Whether the problem is homework, or learning to ride a bicycle.

When my children were born I vowed to God that I would protect them from every single evil I could. I will not break that promise. When my youngest daughter stepped in a fire anthill, she ran to me while those ants crawled up her leg. Being SuperDad though, I immediately recognized what was happening and rushed towards her, closing the gap, and brushing off the ants. She walked away with four bites on her feet only. Later on we moved out of that house.

I guess intuition is one of my superpowers. I can immediately assess a situation. If one of my daughters is screaming or crying I can figure out why in seconds. This ability comes in handy in most household situations. Cuts, scrapes, and other wounds heal faster in my presence also. I don't know why, I guess it is because of a father's love.

Superspeed has happened to me one time. My youngest was going to go swimming with my oldest daughter. My oldest can reach the bottom of the pool, my youngest cannot. Well, I was at the middle of the pool, which is a standard size hotel pool, and my wife was at the end of the pool that my daughter was at. I was watching, of course. My youngest got in over her head and went under. I saw this, figured out what was happening, and by the time she went under again I was pulling her out. All this before my wife could get to her. Not her fault, I love my wife very much but I was just faster that's all. My youngest can swim just a little. When she went under she knew how to tread water a little and got to the surface again. I knew she wouldn't be able to keep that up for long. She didn't have to. That was the only case of superspeed I have experienced.

As my daughters are both very young, 10 and 7, I have been able to save them from several things. As time goes on my abilities will lessen. I will not be able to save them from heartbreak, though I wish with all my heart that I could. I also will not be able to save them from most of life's let downs and pains. I hope that I remember what the true meaning of being a father is when those times come.

The true meaning of being a father is not saving them from everything that hurts. It is always being there to pick them up and tell them that its ok. By the way, being a father is the only kind of superhero I ever want to be.

Are you a Super Hero

Are you a Super Hero too?
