I REMEMBER MY BEST HALLOWEEN
I remember my best Halloween~
When the world was safe and serene. ~
I remember the excitement in the air~
When children could trick or treat~
Without a care.
It was a night dry and clear~
With the wind brisk and fresh. ~
It was a night the moon was full~
As the stars shown at rest.
My mother was dressed in a clown suit~
With navy blue polka dots. ~
My dad held a flashlight to walk~
So we wouldn’t take a flop.
I was dressed as a princess~
My favorite costume of all time! ~
My little sister a ballerina~
Pretty her costume was just like mine.
Our little brother was dressed as a bum~
He mostly was carried because he was only one. ~
We walked up and down the street~
To our neighbors house we shuffled~
Our tiny feet in the leaves.
Some neighbors we called Auntie or~
Grandma and Grandpa you see~
Even though they were not really~
Related to me. ~
That is when our neighbors were like family~
How nice it was that way ~
When I was only three.
I remember one special yellow house~
The biggest up on the street~
Where Miss Lyman lived~
Victorian shaped and truly surreal.
We stood in front of the gigantic door~
Lit by a blue light~
She gave us more than candy~
On that wondrous night.
She gave me pennies for my UNICEF box~
Hot coco and donuts we had too. ~
Just before we left~
She wished us all addio.
.
Before the night ended~
There was an even better special stop~
The Firehouse was where we~
Had a party to attend that thrilled all of us!
There were many children in costumes~
From surrounding neighborhoods. ~
We paraded for best costume~
My baby brother only stood.
There was bobbing for apples in~
A big watered filled pan~
There was soda and more candy~
As well as games to play for prizes at hand.
Soon my legs felt weary~
As it was way past my bed time. ~
All the enthusiasm had come to a close~
And it was time to go home this night.
Filled to the brim with sugar~
To our car did we go. ~
Our bags filled with toys and treats~
Over flowed! ~
All three of us children fell asleep~
As caring parents carried us to our~
Very own beds we naired made a peep.
I remember my best Halloween~
When the world was safe and serene. ~
I remember the excitement in the air~
When children could trick or treat~
Without a care.
