Poem about a Con Artist/Sociopath

Their unexpected meeting left her hungry for more...

little did she know the terror in store

Her beautiful green eyes sparkled at his chivalrous show

was this destiny before her? she surely hoped so

Seemingly chance encounter is what she surmised

but time would expose, a charade full of lies

Every move he made, was part of his plan

to make her his own and make him her man

Handsome and charming; his words flowed with ease

his actions so perfect, there's no doubt they'll please

The wolf in sheep's clothing would gain the girl's trust

so portraying a good image was an absolute must

His deceit would accomplish what he had planned

he promised true love and asked for her hand

The imposter revealed his true self within days

she'd now have to live with his sinister ways...

Characteristics of a Sociopath

According to an article written in 2013, by M.E. Thomas in Psychology Today: these are the main characteristics of a Sociopath:

  • Superficial charm and good intelligence
  • Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking
  • Absence of nervousness or neurotic manifestations
  • Unreliability
  • Untruthfulness and insincerity
  • Lack of remorse and shame
  • Inadequately motivated antisocial behavior
  • Poor judgment and failure to learn by experience
  • Pathologic egocentricity and incapacity for love
  • General poverty in major affective reactions
  • Specific loss of insight
  • Unresponsiveness in general interpersonal relations
  • Fantastic and uninviting behavior with alcohol and sometimes without
  • Suicide threats rarely carried out
  • Sex life impersonal, trivial, and poorly integrated
  • Failure to follow any life plan

Inspiration for my Poem:

This poem was inspired by a true story of a dear friend of mine. She met, what she thought was the perfect man for her. He was charming, seemingly loving, adorned her with gifts and shows of affection, and pretended to care. Soon after their wedding, he revealed the 'true' him. It was not only a nightmare for her, but a great loss of the man she thought she married. Her dreams were shattered along with her self-esteem, safety and trust in people.

She has found healing after leaving this destructive relationship and currently teaches violence-free workshops throughout her community. Her favorite quote after going through an abusive relationship with a Narcissistic Sociopath is: "I can now look back and see he was one of my best teachers. He taught me many lessons; what to look for in relationships and letting go of the belief that everyone is what they appear to be."

Excellent poem of reality here! Yes, there are plenty of these imposters out there, and I am pretty good with my intuition, just knowing something is not right, and sure enough, it is not right. Yes, there are red flags that I can always spot. I feel for those women who actually do marry them. Sometimes one really does not know until it is too late, but I would still get out fast. I would like to link this to a recent hub I published on this issue. I call these imposters, "Silver tongued devils."

Voted up and sharing +++ (will come back to share, as my computer is acting up)

God bless. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Appearances can be deceiving. You often find many imposters online. They're so charming at first and they know exactly what to say to hook you in, but eventually their true colors come out. You have captured this very well. thanks for sharing

Kaiyan-glad you were able to make it out of the misery. My sister was with this man for thirteen years. It took a lot of courage to leave him because of the threats. It was hell to watch what she went through and I'm just glad those days are over.

Aww, thanks for that nice compliment Michael. I write poetry when something stirs inside of me. I was actually inspired to write this because I read an article on famous women that were killed by their abusive husband's. This in turn, brought me back to the dark days when my sister was married to an abusive man. I am so glad she is out of that oppressive life. She does have to deal with him at times because they had two kids together, but other than that, she wants nothing to do with him. He's a classic sociopath.

Faith Reaper-thanks for putting my link up on your hub. If it's ok, I'd like to put your hub link on this one. I was going to look for other hubs that had this theme, so thanks for making it easy.

My sister fell for this guy when she was younger and more naïve. She was with him for thirteen years of oppression and abuse. The great thing that came out of it was her two beautiful children. Thanks for much for reading. I am so glad those days are over. It was hard to watch my happy twin lose the twinkle in her eye.

Hi Europe Walker-Sadly, hundreds and hundreds of women have been fooled. I have also known men who have been in this situation. So glad my sister finally got out of the abusive marriage. Her life was a living nightmare.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Dear Monis Mas-thanks so much for reading my poem on abuse. The poem was inspired from my twin sister's real life imposter of an ex husband. Her life with him was a roller coaster ride from hell.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 3 years ago from Minnesota Author

Hi xstatic-thank you kindly for stopping by to read my poem. I am reminded of my sister's ex husband from time to time and have to vent. It was hard on not just her, but me. Watching your sister crumble from years of verbal and emotional abuse was heart wrenching for me.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 3 years ago from Minnesota Author

drbj-they are everywhere and you are so right that many are female. My sister was married to a classic abuser/sociopath for many years. Her life was so hard back then and I can't tell you the joy it brought me, when she divorced the jerk. Sadly, this guy continues to ruin lives with each new woman he woos.

Hi again Faith and thanks again for linking our hubs. I added your hub now and the others you had. I hope the other hubbers are ok with that. I think it's great to link similar hubs for those who are needing more education or support regarding the topic of abuse.

Hi lovedoctor-you do have to be careful online as well. Like you said, eventually their true colors come out. I appreciate you reading my poem on abuse. It was inspired by my twin sister, who was married for thirteen years to a very abusive man.

I have been there and done that but happy to say, " Not today. " Yehaw! I had a daughter-in-law who fit your description perfectly, thankfully she is long gone, replaced with an angel. Loved your poetry Linda...

So glad you're done with that and that you have a sweet daughter-in-law now. It is amazing how one person can create such chaos in one's life. My sister went through so much with her ex and it almost killed her in more ways than one. Happily, her beautiful spirit came back eventually. Thanks for coming by Ruby-always love seeing your smiling face.

I have three daughters! I have warned them against this very thing. Maybe I'm old fashioned and a little chivalrous, but I feel as if it is also the duty of my fellow men to look out for these snakes and confront them. Sometimes this makes us the bad guys (especially us fathers), but our first priority should be to protect, not worry if we are hurting a feeling.

Great piece...and thumbs up.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 3 years ago from Minnesota Author

I love that your old fashioned and wish there were more men out there like you. I agree with you that it's not about hurting feelings if it's about protecting your children. Thanks so much for reading my poem Wayne-I appreciate it.

P.S.-your daughters are blessed to have a father like you :-)

Gypsy Rose Lee profile image

Great poetry and great reminder. It is always dangerous because so many people pretend to be what they are not. Bad guys are everywhere and we must always be on the look out. It's easy to pretend to be something that we're not and that is where the danger lays. Passing this on.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 3 years ago from Minnesota Author

Thank you Gypsy Rose Lee for passing this on. I have known both men and woman who fit this category. I had a supervisor years back that was so abusive and manipulative that I quit a job I use to love. It only takes one bad apple to screw things up.

This poem however, was about my sister's ex husband. Life with him was oppressive and scary. It's so great to see how sis has thrived since getting away from his dark energy. Blessings.

Hi James~thanks so much for coming by. The man who kidnapped those three young girls, would definitely fit the bill here. His neighbors had no idea that he was such a monster. It does really make you think of how many evil people we talk to and don't even know it.

Thanks dreamseeker~it is sad how many men and women I know that thought they met their true love and it ended in misery. I guess all we can do is have faith that people are being honest, yet not naïve at the same time.

Linda!!!!!! It's always so nice to hook up with my American princess (and your lovely twin sister) I sincerely hope all is well with both of you these days and you should really write some more narrative poetry for I love this creative side of you.

I had to take a break from the Hub for a few weeks because of mental and physical health issues and sure enough it caught up with me. On Monday I had to admit myself to the hospital ER because of chest discomfort and in my left arm too and I spent most of the day there only to be let out with a heart monitor. That is where I stand now although the heart monitor is off and my blood work is good but now I must see what they found in the x-rays. I was surrounded by dedicated women in the ER that day even the head doctor was a lady ....bless them all and sending you warm wishes from Colin, Little Miss Tiffy and Mister Gabriel at lake erie time ontario canada 3:49pm and summer is back again, I think.

Colin, I am so sorry that I'm just seeing this comment today. My goodness dear friend. Did the heart monitor show anything wrong or is all well? Please let me know. I've worn those heart monitors before too. It's a little unnerving. Let me also know how the xrays turned out. Please get back to me. Your princess is a little worried about her Canadian Prince. What is a princess without a prince. Please be well :-0 Love Linda

I am so sorry you have gone through this Cat. It's a hellish way to live as I lived it when sis was married to an abusive man. I look back at how her life was and how beautiful it is now that she divorced him. She started coming back to life as soon as his dark energy left the house. She now goes to Social Service Agencies and does talks on abuse to help others going through it or perpetrating it. My sister makes me so proud. It took so much courage for her to leave this guy as he used so many scary threats. I hope you are thriving as my sister is Cat. God Bless you for sharing that you've been through this too.

Hi Shanmarie~it is chilling to live with an abusive person. Your life is all about them. Controlling and Over Powering the other person, makes it difficult to have any kind of life. I pray for any man or woman who is living this oppressive life.

Thanks so much Rose for your kind comment. It is a hard way to live and I pray that anyone in an abusive relationship, get into therapy for support and guidance. I know it made all the difference for my sister. Thanks so much for the vote up my friend.

I think there are many out there that got out of this situation. Thanks so much for reading my dark poem. Most of these dark poems are about my twin sister's ex. I guess It's good to know where the inspiration comes from. LOL ~Don't know if that's what I should call it or him. It's not something I ever wanted to know about, but my sister's life with an abusive man taught me a lot.
