Old Glory
By: Wayne Brown
A mighty symbol flies over this great American nation
It’s the symbol of freedom; the symbol of our salvation
It represents our structure and represents our history
It represents who we are here in the land of the free
13 horizontal stripes, alternately arranged in red and white
Represents 13 original colonies who started our freedom fight
The rectangular block in the upper left corner of deep blue
Represents our union and all that its has been through
The fifty white stars are aligned five and four in nine rows
One for each state, against the union blue they pose
Together they create a wind furled symbol of the free
Such a grand old flag; such a great country
Betsy Ross sewed the original in honor of the great revolution
It was there as the founders signed the American Constitution
From those days forward to these times of present day
The Flag has flown proudly showing freedom is the way
In the Civil War, the union was split on emancipation
At times it looked as if we would cease being a great nation
But when the strife was over and the healing had begun
Old Glory was waving proudly in the new day’s sun
The Flag has been to war in almost every corner of the world
To fight for peace and honor, its colors have unfurled
It stands as a symbol to our courageous fighting spirit
Oppression will not stand; our nation will not endure it
Over the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier, our Flag proudly flies
It waved over Ground Zero after terror flew from the skies
Day upon day, it has seen America in good times and in strife
A constant reminder we are dedicated to freedom in this life
It has been ripped up, stomped on, spit on, and much worse
Some have even burned it as our country they did curse
But the Flag is perpetual; its enduring, resilent spirit sustains
For those who died to defend it and for those who here remain
Let your heart soar when the “Star Spangled Banner” we sing
Stand with hand over heart and hear the glorious voices sing
Know the Stars and Stripes fly over freedom-loving sod
Symbolizing our liberty; One Nation Under God!
