Mother's Day Poems

Mother’s day is fast approaching; and in my wish to honor my beloved mother and all the mothers in the world, I have penned these three poems especially dedicated to them.

May all of you have a blessed day with your mothers wherever they may be - this Mother’s day, and always.

I have written the first poem below with my mother in mind. She lives in another province with my father and three nephews. A retired public school teacher, my mother has opted to work part-time as a college professor, as she still enjoys teaching. She also tends to her garden and takes good care of the three young boys who are with them.

For mothers who live far away

(especially dedicated to my Mama)

Although we have been apart

for quite a while now,

I want you to know

that neither distance

nor length of time

can ever separate us

in thought and affection

as we will always be

bound with

the powerful cords of love;

enwrapped in

the steadfast arms of hope;

and shielded with

the tough armor of faith.

Hope this special day

finds you

thinking of me.

May you find comfort

in this short piece

especially penned

for you;

and may joy fill your heart

as you read each word

delighting

in its meaning and truth.

For those whose mothers have passed away

I can feel the delightful warmth

of the breeze

as it caresses my skin;

I can see the leaves

taking their rightful place

against the backdrop

of spring sunshine.

Soon my garden will turn into

a brilliant kaleidoscope

of shades and shapes

heralding the special day

dedicated to mothers

from all over the world-

the day when

mothers, young and old

are honored.

But while some people

celebrate this day

in the presence

of their own mothers,

you would

be spending it

with but a shadow

of her memories-

long buried yet, unforgotten.

Your mother who

might have gone ahead, yet

will always stay in your heart

forever a part of you.

But that won’t stop you

from remembering her

and honoring her

in your thoughts.

Nothing can ever take away

the legacy of love

she had bequeathed

upon you, which,

has made you withstand

the harsh blows

that life after her demise,

has given.

So in commemoration of this day,

dwell in your mother’s memory;

delight in her presence

in your heart;

and take pleasure listening

to her silent laughter

and lovable voice

in your mind.

Reflections of a Mother is another hub dedicated to mothers. It offers personal insights into the wonders and joys of this noble calling called motherhood.

A Poem for Young Mothers

Who says mothers have

to be old and gray

to be wise?

Although you are but

on the threshold of motherhood,

smiles of understanding

and looks of wisdom

are vividly etched

on your youthful face.

Who then is fool enough

to judge you for your age

saying you have no right

to be called a mother

when age is not

the only absolute key

to the making of

commendable mothers?

There are no schools

that certify mothers;

no licensure tests

to regulate their

mothering practice;

What mothers have

are their genuine love

for their offspring;

their sincere desire

to give them their best;

and their fervent drive

to shield them from harm.

Motherhood is not confined

to a mother’s age and background;

but it slowly blooms

with years and wisdom.

It has its own amazing way

of molding ladies,

young and old alike,

to become ordinary people

playing remarkable roles

in rearing good citizens

who are themselves

capable of being

good parents in the years to come.
