Send A Message

Long Before Texting Was Cool

Writers have been keeping the art of communication alive

Dropping notes and sending letters to everyone they know

Talking about everything from the weather to a recent trip

Missing you or get well soon

Each time leaving a mark in time

For other people to see how wonderful it is

That we keep the bonds of family and friends

Even years ago there were telegrams for urgent messages

Now fifty years later a new kind of communication

That leaves no paper behind and can be delivered in seconds

Two people can continue to chat for as long as they want

Then as always we have to go

We get busy doing so many things in are life

But when the time arises I am sure there will be more

I am not sure what comes next

Fifty years from now what will make texting out dated and obsolete

Like the old letter in your hand after a mailman delivered it after a three day journey

No stamps needed

No lossed mail and quite the opposite

A quick reply and after that an endless chain of letters to come

But one thing it doesn't have

Is the hand written love that was taken

To make this letter so special

Texts today also have their own language

Where simplicity and speed is the key

Words like you are u

are is r

four is 4

before is b4

When you use capital letters that means you are yelling

Here is only a few that I have learned

As I struggle to text in a world so different

I feel it takes away the passion in writing

Words become a lingo

So many more words are shortened or abbreviated to save time and energy

Who has the time to say I love you

When all you have to say is luv u

In a changing world we have to change with the times

I wonder if we have gone to far and completely lost our minds

It's changed a lot in my life (I'll be 81 in a few days). I miss the more personal touch of handwritten letters. I never thought I'd happily see any of my poetry in print rather than hand-written - - same with letters. I always wrote lots of letters - and they were as long and drawn-out as my text messages & comments. In my early days online in a chatroom I visited (mostly teens) I just wrote out my sentences as I do, and one kid asked me "What are you ON?" haha

I like your poem about it. Your poetry just keeps improving! The main thing is love and truly caring - however it's expressed.

Nellieanna I first want to say a Big Happy Birthday and in a world of writers I am proud to say nobody writes like you.I love the written word and I had a tough time changing over from my personal writings to type written words. The words now seem so cold and unforgiving. When I write something hand written I could see my passion or my tiredness if it is sloppy in every writing.I have boxes and boxes of notes and stories and thoughts. They are in pen, pencil, and marker. They have been smudged ,torn and worn and still have survived all my 30 plus years. It brings me to tears when I see my writings that have been lost.I have been scanning some but it takes a great deal of time and in that time I can just write so many more new stories.I love to leave longer comments but the hubPages prevents that. They block my screen and smaller comments are only possible. How do you write more without gong back and writing and correcting.I love talking to you and enjoying all your comments and advice.I just keep on tryinig to write better with one more poem or writing that I write.Thanx so much and I will listen and learn from your kind words .You have been a great influence on me.Have a beautiful night.

Thank you, my friend, for a delightful response to my comments! I always like the honesty you bring to whatever you write or say! And thank you for the birthday greetings. I've ordered myself a new Mac for my birthday. giggle. . . .

I've been in the process of typing my thousands of hand-written poems on my computer. I don't prefer that the arrangements on the typed page lacks the personal touches that went into the original penning on notebook paper (mostly) or scraps of paper or backs of envelopes or in 'blank books'; - - but the trade-off is that they're better preserved here and it allows me to share them in my hubs. Occasionally I scan a few to be shown on a hub in my original handwriting, but it does take longer to scan - and they're in an image form then rather than a text form. Just typing them is fast & for hubs, one needs typed words to satisfy the word-count requirement! The storage value is better, also. Images take lots more bytes and are less accessible. So I don't recommend trying to preserve them that way. Just typing the words makes more overall sense.

But the biggest advantage to the typed poems for me has been their ease of accessibility. I file temp them by first line and/or title into a file I call "Album - My Poetry" and there, they are automatically alphabetized!!!!! I almost always remember the first line or title and there it will be! Wow - before, I had to go through 7 thick books of handwritten poetry arranged simply in chronological order as I wrote them for several years, in order to locate a whole poem I remembered but not always word-for-word. I'm still getting them all into my computer file, but so far there are 1428 in it (not allowing that a few with titles are listed both by title and first line for easier finding).

I can also make note with them of in which hubs I've used them, which has value so I'm not reusing them all the time. So one trades-off values. I'm aware that for them to last past my own lifetime, the typed versions are more likely. And when and if I decided to publish into books, they're more accessible for me!

I still have the handwritten ones, though the ink is starting to fade a bit on some of them, since some date back so many many years, though a mean person burned many of my earliest poetry trying to destroy my spirit till I learned to hand-write backup copies and hide them.

I share these things to encourage you to do what you really want to do with your writings - and when you decide what that is, to do whatever it takes to do it! It doesn't stop one from writing now. I still write all the time, even though I'm also preserving my writings of the past. We find time to do what we really value. The value of doing it outweighs the time I must take to do it. And I'm not under pressure to do it all within a given time. I take it in my own stride.

I can assure you that the passion we feel when writing can never be fully transferred to the awareness of the reader. That's their contribution to the exchange when we choose to share our work. We usually see it when we read what we've written. I do - my poetry is like a diary. In fact it was written for that reason, never intending to be shared with others. I'm always delighted now when a readers says she or he got something out of it - sometimes, even what I meant, but it doesn't have to be that. It's like all communication - - it takes two! :-) And we can't blame a hearer or reader for getting what we tried to say - though it does make us try to be as clear and on-target as possible when we write. In my own case, I didn't think about that, though - it was just for me. If I never shared it with anyone, the value to me was immeasurable! It literally saved my life & sanity in being written at that time when there was a deliberate effort from someone to destroy them - almost successfully.

Don't be discouraged. You can do whatever you deem you need! It doesn't depend on anything else. Within reality, you have the control of your own reins. Hugs.

I'm thrilled to encourage if I can when there's an obstacle in the way. I still like Robert Schuller's motto:

" When faced with a mountain, I will not quit! I will keep on striving until I climb over, find a pass through, tunnel underneath or simply stay and turn the mountain into a gold mine."

Hugs.

Nellieanna I believe we are all here on earth to learn a series of lessons.God constantly tests us to see if we can improvise, create and use all our talent for the good and in the end survive and live a good life.So each obstacle is a road block. We have to find the key that fits the lock.I live up to the challange. When left with more than one choice I will pick a solution. Not always the right one but one that will take me closer to my goals. My biggest test is not what to do but how to consistantly do something for myself first instead of helping others who are in greater need. There comes a time when I meet people in life that have it worse than me and they need help and then when we offer to help they accept and they should change but then with the same choice to live a better life soon they choose the bad choices all over again. No disreguard for animals or the welfare of others. Only caring about themselves. So we have to distance ourselves from the people who are like that. They are fakers, imposters, scam artists, and not nice people.I do not understand their thinking or the reasons why they they would choose wrong over right. They only care about themselves and really put animals and other people last .I live and learn.I know there are so many wonderful people in the world that are so more important and these people are only a few.I found it better to make sure I keep surrrounding myself with the best thoughts, ideas, and people that make life glorious.Thanx so much for making today and every day a little bit more special and a surprise to look forward to. Have a wonderful day and thanx for reading.

Just one thing to be added to your very good reply and it's that doing for oneself and others isn't either/or - because when you do good for others you ARE doing for yourself and your real goals of being a good person. "They" always must use help offered at their own level of development, and it can vary from one end to the other of the spectrum. We can never expect the results in others which we had in mind.

What we can and must expect is our own willingness to sensibly offer and to do what we are moved to do because it's the right thing to do - & to abide by the results, even if disappointing. That's what matters.

And yes, when we have evidence that 'they' are where they are and are not ready, willing or able to move from it, we must & should refocus our own attention elsewhere where it has possibility to make a difference; not to 'write them off' (they are the only ones able to do that!) - but to be as constructive as WE can be in our own lives where our responsibility rests. We can use the freed-up time as we see fit. It may be to organize our poetry or to venture on another helper role. We are in that driver's seat and travel-planner position. Those are our choices and duties to ourselves and our values to choose & control, not others'.

It is, as you say, important to surround oneself with positive things & thinking as much as possible. But we also need to learn to just BE positive and a positive force wherever one is, even among negativity - because it is who one IS! "They" can't pollute one's realm without one's cooperation (willingly or passively). So just don't give them that.

You're right that it is not productive to 'beat your head against a brick wall', to put it that way! haha. It's not necessary to understand their thinking, only to understand that they are doing what they are impelled to do, which is their realm. We're not built to 'see' others except by their behavior or words. We can't see into their heads or hearts, which are in their realms. In fact, it's why we are not to judge them. We are not 'in there'. But we are 'in here' & can & should decide whether or not their company is good for us. That is in one's own realm. Just know that if they're around us doesn't mean they have access TO us.

Being a good example and true to your own standards is what you can always do to improve the over-all 'mix'. YOU can be the good person others seek as a good influence with which to surround themselves. One never knows when some of it will rub off and take root. It's one's only real responsibility. The word responsibility has this special meaning: response-abiltiy. That is one's OWN response to life as it flows along and by. Others in it have their own response-ability to take care of. They shouldn't have much time left over to fuss & fume about anyone else's. :-) So - just be YOU, dear friend and let YOUR light shine forth.

I'm still chuckling from one who's surely lost her mind in this new and modern world I feel the best listening to good old rock and roll, watching Old Hollywood movies and romancing the old-fashioned way by candle light. Thanks for the memories this brought up. You know that we can actually take anything which the modern world has whipped up and turn it to our own advantage and satisfaction.

Nellieanna I am inspired by your comment and will continue to find better ways to improve myself and enjoy the things I love in life so much. There are so many incredible things that happen in just one day it could take me hours for here to list.I will give you my short version. After a wonderful nights sleep my mind is clear as a bell.New ideas are flowing in every direction.I am just welcoming them with an open heart and mind.Spending the morning loving my wife, doing a few chores inbetween having fun playing with our cat,off to work and thinking about how nice it is having friends that care so much that spend time writing and sharing the knowledge they know.Have a great day.kj force I recieve all your comments and sometimes it takes a few days for me to get back to them. They just sit in cyber space.I think you should create a new kind of communication for people over 50 so they can have fun sharing their thoughts too.KoffeeKlatch Gals That would be nice if they practiced a little of both once and awhile.Maybe then we can all can change with the times.Thanx so much.GypsyRose Lee I love the way can have the best of both worlds. That is wonderful!!Rock on.

Dear friend. Thank you. But I'm a one-on-one-in-real-time-as-it-comes-up person. If my touch helps someone in that way, then it's for him or her to 'pay it forward' by adding its truth to his or her own knowledge and passing it along, improved by that combination, in another real time situation with another real person. Not everyone in the world - just one candle lighting another - and perhaps the glow will be noticed. But it IS effective for the individuals involved regardless of it's big-picture effects and that is what really lasts.

I see so many new groups forming for various grand purposes which surely fulfill some of them, But everyone can't keep up with so many tangents and trying to seems to fragment & dilute their individual effort where they already are.

I'm very much an 'action right where I am' person. The most widespread I've ever been is in publishing my hubs on Hubpages. My commnts and replies to comments are totally one-on-one.

I have a personal website but I almost went out of my way to keep it personal and one-on-one, rather than stirring up lots of 'hits' and volume of visitors. See what I'm saying? But this is 'me'. If others see it differently, I'm fine with it - for them.

I'm doing what I feel works and I do happen to touch quite a few lives doing it this way; - it's one by one that matter to me, not numbers. We can only all change with the times and our lives' needs individually one at a time. What we can then do is share with others, one at a time. That's what I do and what I'll continue doing, my dear friend. I won't be creating yet another tangent group. If someone else decides to, it's fine. I'll support it in my own way.

Hugs and I'm overjoyed to hear your day is so good!

Mine is, too. It's incredibly wonderful!! A long term estrangement is opening up. It's something to celebrate - and who I am here on Hubpages contributed to it!

Nellieanna I worked all night. It is 3 A.M. here and this is when I do my best writing. My day of work is over and my wife is off to sleep.I listen to the peaceful quiet of my home and reflect on my day.I overall feel content and satisfied for the work that I have done to the best of my ability.I sometimes dream of things I couldn't do or other times I just smile inside thinking of all the things I did. Many times I feel as if I was on a magic carpet ride and I go and go until the night comes to an end.One thing is for certain I will always thank privately and publicly the people who have touched my life in some way.I like to think when I say my prayers at night people hear me and my thoughts go to every person I mention. This is one thing I think science will uncover in the near future. That we can hear all and see all but many don't spend the time to listen and really hear what others are saying. So I am developing the art of listening and cherishing at the same time. You are very wise and I love to listen and learn so many new things in life.May your days be filled with the freshest water to drink and nights be filled with th greatest thoughts that wisk you away in every direction you please. For me I love to watch as my life unfolds surprise after surpise and I can say behold another wonder I get to experience and share. To a world of passion left for everyone to discover if they so chooose .Have a good night or to many it is have a good morning.
