The Best of Me

Source
Source

I have spent my whole life
trying to be anyone but me.
No matter how I tried and tried,
I could be none else, but me.

I was never good enough.
There was no perfect me...
and so I started out in life
with strong distaste for me.

It was most regrettable,
this curse of being me...
escape from my depressing plight
my ever haunting plea.

Alas, I found, without a doubt
where ere I went, I'd be
gazing from the looking glass...
none other's face but me.

There just was no denying,
and no place on earth to flee.
I was doomed, for all of time,
to be no one but me.

And then, one day, a thought occurred
since me I'm bound to be,
perhaps I should, with all my heart,
just be my finest me.

Today that is my only goal,
to be all I can be.
With grace and flourish, now, I strive
to be the best of me!

I like this, some of us as kids get beat down so much that we think we're never good enough. Good enough for who, or what? All we can be is ourselves, that's all we really need to be! Peace!! Tom

That's all we can do: be the best of us. Good poem.

Aw the pursuit of self, oneself, me, I, we try to find us all the time in search of me. I have searched my whole life and still have not found my real me. I must keep searching, he's hidden somewhere, I just have to look harder I guess:0) Nicely done, I liked the flow and rhyme. Bravo rated UP

For most of my life I had wondered how long it would take before people figured out that I was something far less than what I had tried to make them believe. Then at some point I realized that people actually liked me better for being less than what I had been trying to make them believe. So then all I had to do was be ME! But now after reading your insightful poem, I think I want to be YOU.

Another great poem! I connect with it very much for I am always searching for the hidden me, the true me, yet all I find is the me that I already am...

This is another big winner. I've looked over everything and this works for me too. In that heaven is the theme I'm looking for, it looks like I stumbled onto the one that works for me. As far as I can determine these two stand out. Congratulations. RJ
