The Seat By Your Side
(Short Story)One day you will love me
That night your girl friend left early for work.
The seat by your side was mine again.
A few other girls had their eyes on the seat.
Only I could take it with ease.
Best of buddies, aren't we?
Besides, everybody expected you to give me a lift home.
Even when your string of girl friends came and went,
I was always there in that seat by your side,
your best friend.
That night I had one drink too many and started crying.
You just sat there, quietly listening.
You didn't ask me why I cried.
You had always known why I was always on the seat by your side.
You couldn't promise me anything to stop me crying.
You'd never learned to make promises, let alone to keep them.
You did one thing right.
You didn't hold me in your arms or kiss me.
Thanks for making it easier.
All the guys said I was gorgeous.
They particularly liked my cheekbones and angles of my mouth.
They loved it when I hid my smile.
They thought I knew I looked cool that way.
They got it all wrong.
There was simply nothing to smile about,
unless I was in that seat by your side.
One day you would suddenly realise,
the best time you had in your life, you had it with me.
The most hearty laughs you had, we had them together.
One day you would suddenly see,
when all the girls had left you,
I would still be there,
in that seat by your side.
