Time Passes Before We Know It
Remember When ?
It seemed like the other day
You were a kid just going out to play
Not a care in the world
Your only concern was to be home for supper
I wasn't crazy for school
Neither were my friends but we all had to go
There was no use in fighting it
We were all in the same boat
How embarrassing it's would be
To make a scene
As the time went on other things caught my interest
Trivial now but important then
Neighbors that we knew for years moved
Some family and friends passed away
The cycle of life was underway
The old neighborhood was slowly changing
We didn't notice ourselves growing up
Because we were busy doing what kids do
Having fun and enjoying life
I didn't have the worries of bills and work
There was always food on the table and a roof over my head
Twelve years of school seemed like forever
I was sure to be an old man before I could wave my final good bye
The old corner store had a new owner
Penny candy became a thing of the past
Teachere we all knew were retiring
I heard the police lady had died
She made sure we crossed the street safely
She made it clear cars were very dangerous
She wasn't a teacher
More of a friend
Out in the rain and the snow
I never seen her in a car
She had our backs even when we weren't paying attention
Jackie will always be my police lady
Even our mailman retired
Different families brought in different cultures
Not good or bad just something I was used to
It was a real shock when they tore down our middle school
Even though it didn't hold all the greatest memories
Now it was part of my childhood gone for good
As I drive down the street
That old pothole was missing
There is a house where the oldest tree stood
The neighbors yard we used to play in
Now has a fence
My next-door neighbors dog was silent
How could I have known he's been gone eleven years
He was only a pup when I knew him
A friend told me he lived to be twenty two
With a tear then a smile I drove away
