A wish of a poet

Updated on November 21, 2011

A Wish of a poet

Oh nature’s wine! Come,

And fill the empty goblets of mine.

Fill my “myopic eyes” with the dream’s wine.

Thou turn pains into dreams,

and sorrows into soothing rhymes.

Thou that heals the hurt minds,

With benign fingers.

Knits the broken hearts,

With balming needles.

Thou come,

And encased my saddest soul;

in your motherly lap,

a lap of peace.

Where agonies forget to visit,

Skies stop shedding their tears.

And peace prevails.

Oh nature’s wine! Come,

And fill the empty goblets of mine.

Explanation of the poem

A wish of a poet is a philosophical poem with a realistic touch. The whole structure of the poem; revolves around the theme of a pain and misery which every writer of the world faces. Every writer suffers from the pains of heart and mind; when he sees the agonies of world. Here the image of natures wine uses to describe the sleep. And that is the sleep that comforts his/her mind .But unfortunately worldly agonies unable him to sleep. The poet is calling nature’s wine, to come and fill her eyes with dreams. Here the image of empty goblet used to describe eyes without dreams. Actually dreams are the treasure of every writer.

Sleep performs her duties as a comforter; and is able to heal the minds and knits the broken hearts. Her presence in the life of a man is like a consoler which absorbs all the pains of life.

In the third stanza sleep is like lap of a mother, and poet is calling her to come and encased her soul in her lap; provides her peace and save her from the worldly agonies. A little child always find peace in the lap of his mother.

So poet wishes for mother’s lap to sleep. And if we deeply analyze, we will find the truth that mothers lap is the symbol of sleep and that is the place where agonies forget to visit and actually agonies not dare to visit that lap; because of that laps guarded by a mother. Sleep like a nurse heals all the wounds.

“Where skies forget to shed their tears” here the images of tears use to describe the pains of sky. when they lament about the pains of earth but in mothers lap they also forget to shed tears. And this way a child gets comfort from the pains of world. And poet wants to sleep in the lap of sleep, which is as comfortable as the lap of a mother. And sleep is like a mother and nurse able to console and comfort an injured soul. In a nutshell we can say that a wish of a poet is the wish of every sensitive artist to escape from the worldly agonies. There is universal appeal in this poem, The misery of a poet actually throws light on the pain of every writer .And his wish to escape from worldly agonies, is actually the wish of every writer to get peace of mind.
