Homer Price
Robert McCloskey's Homer Price had a greater impact on some kids than his more popular Make Way For Ducklings
I don't know if it has anything to do with my dad having been an engineer, but McCloskey's two books of short stories about a boy inventor from Centerburg, Ohio had an influence on me that lingers to this day.
Homer inspired me in so many ways. He freed me to think that even as a child I might invent things. He walked among adults as a young equal in intellect. No adventure was too great to tackle himself.
I remember one night when I was in my twenties and was on a camping trip, four skunks joined me in my campsite and I knew the fact that I had no fear of upsetting them and thus causing them to spray stemmed back to Homer Price having a pet skunk and my subsequently learning quite a bit about skunks.
No matter what your age, I think you'd be entertained by the Homer Price stories.
