Air Conditioner Prices and Options

Updated on June 1, 2010

If you are looking for a way to beat the summer heat, there is no better cooling option than home air conditioners.  Unlike rotary fans that only move hot air around and can burn up electricity when powered all day, an air conditioner provides a steady flow of cool air through a house, so that the intake and outtake process can make even the harshest summer days tolerable.  There are many models of air conditioning units, and air conditioner prices can range from as little as a few hundred dollars to as much as ten thousand dollars for installation of a comprehensive system.

Home Air Conditioners

An air conditioned environment will be ideal for summertime work or home areas.  It has been proven that workplaces powered with air conditioning have greater efficiencies than work places that rely on single fan units or are entirely without any climate controls.  At a high temperature, human body heat is not released, so the pent up energy makes one easily irritated and stressed.  Additionally, higher temperatures make the mind run slightly slower, which can produce a drowsy effect.  The unit will circulate air, removing dust and allergens, while air conditioner filters make these particles easy to dispose of.  There is also practically no noise, so that unlike a fan, it is ideal for a situation that demands concentration or peace of mind.  A window air conditioner rotates in fresh air from the outdoors.

Where to Find One?

The majority of portable air conditioner units can be found at any major retail or home improvement stores, such as Target, Best Buy, or Home Depot. These stores sell products that are relatively small and may only be able to provide circulation of cool air to one or two rooms. If you are interested in a comprehensive home air system, you may need to contact a construction company; while most houses are readily designed to have air conditioners installed standard, there are several measurements and functions that must be tested to see if your home's air system will permit central air.

Air Conditioning Units can be found at Home Improvement stores, Department Stores and Online.

The Best Brands

At only one hundred dollars, the Kenmore 75050 conditioning unit is one of the cheapest models available on the market.  Customers appreciate the low cost, but such a bargain is due to the lack of features in the design, as well as the inefficiency of the unit; it is not approved by the Energy Star system, so customers will only be able to figure out how much electricity it requires from a copy of their electrical bill.  A Frigidaire, by comparison, costs some seven hundred dollars but has adjustable limits, remote controls, and power saving functions.

Some A/C units may be more expensive than others but they may be more energy efficient and have power saving options. Do your research before investing in a unit.

Installation Costs

To completely put in a comprehensive home cooling unit, the price is anywhere from three thousand to eight thousand dollars, plus installation fees.  An APC Network Air unit costs four thousand dollars but has enough power to cool an entire home during the hottest days of summer.  An APC must be hooked up directly to an electrical line, meaning that professional installation is needed to ensure the device is up to home standards codes.
