Doctor Charged with Murder to Create Hospital Bed Space
Dr. Virginia Soares de Souza and three other doctors have been charged with murder by giving muscle relaxing drugs to patients, reducing their oxygen supply to to die of asphyxia at the Evangelical Hospital in the southern city of Curitiba, Brazil.
Why?
The only answer provided by her was to create bed space in the small hospital. The patients killed were mostly invalid and many were going to die anyway. However, while she is only charged with seven murders so far, investigators fear that the toll could rise to 300!
Police found out using wiretaps and hearing conversations of her discussing this to make additional bed space. The victims were all in intensive care and by the her own words needed some help to the next world. Some 1,700 cases are now being looked at. The common thread was that all patients were given a muscle relaxant such as Pancuronium (trademark Pavulon) increasing patient dependence on artificial respiration, which was then turned off.
Prosecutors said Dr. Virginia De Souza felt she had the power to decree the moment when a victim would die.
