Her Majesty and 'The Donald'
When May invited Donald Trump to visit the UK on state visit many asked would the billionaire businessman and star of the US version of 'The Apprentice' turned President get the full works. It seems when Trump touches down in Airforce One that is exactly what he will be getting and he according to reports fully expects it.
However since Trump signed his ban on Muslims coming to the US this has some what soured the overall picture of his visit for some. As well as there being mass demonstrations against him in the US there have been major protests too against him and his policy the length and breadth of the UK in cities like London and Manchester.
Many MP's especially in the opposition parties in Parliament like Labour, the Lib - Dems, and the SNP (Scottish Nationalist Party) are opposed to Trump coming here after this ban was signed into action by the President. No doubt even some Conservatives in May's party are not happy with Trump coming here and perhaps some in Cabinet too, however, Donald Trump is the elected head of the US and the US is the UK's closest friend so the visit will go ahead.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for the cancellation of Trump's visit and no doubt will probably support boycotts of Trump's planned visit. It will be interesting to see what happens when Trump is here and if he meets Sadiq Khan as Trump and Khan have had a war of words on social media in the past. Also Trump will have to meet Jeremy Corbyn Labour leader who promised to show Trump around his constituency and take him for a cup of tea in a mosque.
Of course not everyone in the US and in the UK is opposed to Trump and his ban on Muslims from certain countries. When interviewed on British news media many New Yorkers felt Trump was acting to protect America from attack and Nigel Farage of UKIP spoke in glowing terms of Donald Trump and his ban on Muslims entering the US. Indeed Trump has said the seven nations or so identified as being a threat to the US thus leading to travelers from these countries being banned for the moment were identified by Obama and his administration.
The Queen does not get a choice who visits the UK any way as it is at the discretion of the Foreign Office her name merely appears on the invite as the one extending the invitation. The Queen has entertained controversial foreign leaders in the past from Putin, Mugagbe, Xi Jinping and others and what the Queen thinks of giving these leaders a ride in her gold carriage and getting out the best cutlery for state banquets at Buck House is unknown.
So whatever the British population think of a controversial foreign leader coming to these shores seems not to matter as is proven in the visits of the above leaders. Right now the UK is desperately looking around for trade deals once we Brexit the EU hence May flying to the US to meet Trump and Turkey to meet Erdogan even if it means she has to pinch her nose to make deals with these people.
