Open Letter To My Republican Friend
Dear Friend
As a Liberal Democrat, I have endured my fair share of personal attacks from very close friends in regards to my Political views and this letter is to all our friends who wouldn't think twice to insult us because we don't mind paying more taxes to make sure no child in the US goes to bed hungry. This is to all those that feel superior to anyone whose views are different. As a Democrat, I am genetically compassionate and my consciousness will never allow me to hate. Many people will agree that this particular decade of voting has turned the nation into a two sided political party. Hate is used to ultimately insult one another and has grown to the point where they don't only insult a person and their views but their religion, skin color, nationality and even gender and sexual orientation. I refuse to hate you even though you have 0 respect for President Obama and have even went as far as to attack his daughters. I refuse to hate you even though you will do whatever it takes for someone, of another religion, skin color, nationality, to feel unwelcome and less of a human than you. I refuse to take offence at terms like 'butthurt liberals' (classy) and 'freeloaders'. I refuse to hate you even though you can scroll through your Facebook feed, see children drowning and still say 'I don't want them in MY country'.
Your social media posts depicting President Obama as a liar, Hillary as a murderer and Sanders as a Jewish Hitler are often only scrolled through but sometimes, those posts get to someone like me. That's when you see me call you out for the lies you post and I even include the real quote or the fact behind the lies you shared off of your Conservative page.
This letter is for you, my Republican friend. You, the person at the Trump rally who has gladly stood up to punch a protester in the face. You, who stated that this is white America. You, who can look at a Muslim family and point fingers, all while calling them names. You, who wouldn't give a second of your time to hear the views that you don't agree with.
What happened to the Republican party? When has it become okay and quite the norm to act and speak as a racist, misogynist, bigot, like you are superior to minorities?
People from all over the world listen to Trump and think this country has become a joke! Top it all of with videos of protesters who are harassed and assaulted all while the orange guy yells "get em' out of here" and people start to question what would happen if this guy actually won. I imagine it would be something like this. Within the first year, my child's teacher would be parading down the hall with an assault weapon on her shoulder, my family as well as 17 million others would lose health insurance coverage, civil war would erupt considering voicing any disapproval of Trumps statements gets you kicked out and punched in the face, not to even mention that your skin color will surely determine your fate. A wall will be in progress and many US allies would simply turn their backs. Our military would stand down as they said they would and we would be protected by nothing more then Trumps hair and his empty promises.
Some of the major differences we have are gun rights, ACA, Refugee crisis and many others. How are we supposed to fix this problem or find common ground when you won't even listen to what I have to say?
The reason I don't want the next President to repeal Obamacare is because my family and I would lose coverage. This wouldn't only affect us. It would affect millions of others who depended on emergency rooms for healthcare. Every Republican candidate has vowed to repeal this service but they offer no other solution. The only thing we got is a statement from Trump saying "no one will die under my Presidency".
The guns are next. I am not, nor is any Democrat, against gun ownership. I simply don't want guns to get in the hands of those that are incapable of making a decision on when it is necessary to use this weapon and when is it not. I personally don't see why you have to strap up on your shopping trip to Target or on your dinner trip to the local Chipotle.
The Refugee crisis is probably the most emotional subject to someone like me because, as a friend of yours for years, I never knew you lacked empathy. I understand the ISIS crisis and the fear the name itself brings but those same people that are fleeing their homes to get away from the evil are the same people who are not welcomed by you. Can't you find acceptance in your heart? Your elders probably came to the US in the same manner that the refugees are, only as immigrants. They came here for a better life and instead, they get assaulted and insulted by people who have no common decency to keep their vile words to themselves.
This letter is not meant to insult you, rather to try and make you hear the thoughts of so many people out there who can not comprehend the words that come out of Donald's mouth nor the people that support him. Let's unite and stand for civil rights. Let's have a conversation that many refuse to. Let's show the rest of the world that we are not heading for a civil war. We have the power to be civil and regardless of our differences, we have the power of our voices. All of us deserve to be heard.
Next time you utter the word "libtard" consider this. What is so bad about being a Liberal?
Liberal:
1.open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values."they have more liberal views toward marriage and divorce than some people"
2.(of education) concerned mainly with broadening a person's general knowledge and experience, rather than with technical or professional training.synonyms: wide-ranging , broad-based , general "a liberal education"
Isn't it time to stop living in the past and stop living by the ways of our great grandads? Isn't it time to advance in every aspect possible without looking back in time and wondering if this goes against your conservativeness?
I hope that we can talk about the issues, find common ground, learn to respect one another because disrespect comes from both sides. It is time to think about the best for the people and the future.
