Andrew Conway grew up in Walsall (a town near Birmingham in England) which was famous in the 19th Century for the manufacture of whips. Completely ignorant of this fact, he picked up a MA in mathematics from Cambridge University, which, he hopes, will come in useful if all the calculators in the world suddenly stop working. Moved by the spirit of adventure, and a promise of $13,200 a year, he moved to Chicago fifty years to the day after the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. There he liked to ride in the very front seat of the el, and learned how to juggle, but not both at the same time. In the early eighties he moved to Silicon Valley, where he eked out a precarious existence by taking in other people's programming.
Somewhere along the way he became obsessed with whips and whip cracking, probably as a result of brain damage while watching Bonanza as a kid. He has taught whip cracking at the leading circus schools in the UK and the US, as well as lecturing at the San Francisco Academy of Sciences. He has advised scientists, movie companies, performers, whip makers and other whip enthusiasts, and his Bullwhip FAQ remains one of the most popular whip pages on the Internet. Modest to a fault, he blames his success on hard work and clean living, both of which he avoids whenever possible.
