How to discuss dignity in the classroom and at home.

School children across the country are getting ready for what are arguably some of the most anticipated times in their lives—for some, very good times and, for others, very tumultuous times. For the children who endure constant teasing and bullying at school, even getting out of bed in the morning can be daunting. One doesn’t have to be well versed in educational psychology to know that learning cannot effectively happen within the constraints of an emotionally-charged, fearful environment.

Stephanie Heuer understands these types of challenges first hand, having been an instructor of Computer Technology at an elementary school with a multi-cultural student base. As an educator and parent, she has seen the short and long-term emotional and physical effects of bullying on individuals in their home environment and/or classroom situations.As a member of several humanitarian organizations, and a global citizen, Stephanie has lived in Japan, Grand Cayman, Norway, Bonaire, and Venezuela and America.

Heuer is committed to breaking the harmful cycles of humiliation and rankism (abuse of power, based on rank). She believes the preservation of human dignity starts by teaching our children both how to acknowledge when they’ve been mistreated and how to recognize when they mistreat others. When the story idea for her book, DignityRocks! came to her, she knew it would be mind-opening and a “template for change” among children, parents and educators alike. She is now an inspiring seminar speaker for educators on dignity in the classroom and also has a classroom presentation on the creation of the somebody/nobody books for K-12 students.
