Dr. Holmes began her teaching career in 

as an Assistant Teacher in a First Grade

classroom, which was part of the Head

Start Follow-Through Model Program entitled,

“The Learning to Learn School” in Jacksonville, FL.  In the years following, she taught grades K-12 in public schools and in private schools, with most of her experience being in Grades K-2.

Dr. Holmes’ university teaching career began in 1972 at the University of Georgia. In 1974 she joined the faculty of Texas Woman’s University where she taught undergraduate, masters, and doctoral courses for almost 20 years.  She then accepted a teaching position at the University of Central Florida until 1997, at which time she decided to take an early retirement.

At that time Dr. Holmes chose to go back to school to earn a M. A. in Counseling.  She then established a not-for-profit counseling center serving children, adolescents, and adults.  In her private practice, Dr. Holmes specializes in using play therapy with children, especially children who have been abused.

It soon became apparent to Dr. Holmes that there was a need in the community for a school to meet the needs of children who were not successful in the public school settings. She then created Atlantic Inclusive Academy (AiA), a not-for-profit, private school for children who learn differently.  AiA serves students in grades K-12, including students from regular education programs and those from exceptional educational programs.  Dr. Holmes serves as the President and CEO of the Academy  (AtlanticInclusiveAcademy.com).

During these academic years Dr. Holmes has made numerous presentations at international, national, regional, and local professional conferences.  She has had many articles and 19 books published in the field of education and child development.

Dr. Holmes has received various honors in recognition for work with children, families, and teachers, including listings in: Who's Who in the World, World Who's Who of Women, Who's Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Notable Woman of Texas.
