Mike Dennis on HubPages
Hello everyone,
What a joy and delight it is to have found Hubpages, a site where writers can share their thoughts and ideas and meet, network, and read many wonderful writings out there. I enjoy readiing other people's writings as much as I do posting my own hubs, and I also enjoy making comments on hubs as well as receiving them from you fellow hubbers out there. From the contacts I've made and wonderful folks who have joined my fan club, I feel I am becoming part of a wonderful and meaningful writer's community.
I was born and raised in Kentucky and currently reside in Cincinnati, OH where I have lived since 1989. I graduated from Berea College in Berea, KY in 1980 with a BA in French and minors in Psychology, Spanish, German, English and Voice. I did graduate work at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN in Education and Masters and Doctoral work at the University of Cincinnati 1990/1991 in French Language and Literature. I taught French, Spanish and Language arts in public schools for several years.
I guess I could say that I consider myself a Renaissance man with many different interests. Reading, Writing, Psychology, Poetry, speaking Foreign Languages, and Singing are my first true loves. As a child I was always drawn to singing and I studied voice for five years at Berea and for a time aspired for a career in opera. I was in the musicals Camelot and South Pacific and I performed at summer resorts while in college.
I occasionally perform at Nursing homes and enjoy visiting and entertaining the residents. Oldies are as much a part of my vocal repertoire as are gospel songs (which they love), musicals, love songs, pop, ballads, and so forth.
I have combined my love for writing and singing in opening and operating a small singing telegram business "Michael's Uniquely Personalized Singing Telegrams." I write and design the telegrams and then come dressed as a Jester and perform. Yes, I am a man who is comfortable wearing tights, lol! I wore tights in the musical Camelot, why not as a merry minstrel jester?
I have always had a deep love for people and my two desires have always been to entertain, make laugh and be able to uplift, inspire and help others. A very unhappy childhood led me to go within and discover the domains of the heart and soul and an angelic visitation at the age of 13 in my back yard set me upon a spiritual path. When the angel's predictions came true I knew that I wanted to inspire and help others like she did me. This story is told in my book Halfway To Heaven.
I am not ashamed to admit that I have paid my dues and done my time in the 'therapist's chair.' I know from personal experience that there is always hope. The call compels the response and Therapy works if we work it, no matter what ordeals we have undergone or how deep in the pit and abyss of sorrow and depression we have descended.
I have been there many times and occasionally still go back. Old childhood wounds do not go away overnight, and sometimes, something will set off a memory and I become that lost, lonely little boy again. Yet, I have learned that we can become the parent to our inner child that we never had. John Bradshaw's books are excellent on this subject.
I call myself a wounded healer. My psychology studies led to spiritual and metaphysical pursuits for several years and in 1985 I became a professional Psychic and Spiritual Counselor. I do Psychic Readings at corporate events, private and public parties, and in home, email , and phone consultations. This enables me to play the role of Healer, Teacher, Life Coach, Jester, and Comic all in one. Even when I publicly channel angels, ascended masters, and highly evolved souls I ask them to make the audience laugh for as we know laughter truly is the best medicine. Even the Blessed Mother Mary had the audience laughing at times when I channeled her back in 2000.
Travel and Foreign languages have always appealed to me. While studying opera at the summer music institute at Chautauqua, NY in 1977, I met a retired high school French teacher who coached me. She said I had a natural flair for languages and encouraged me to sign up for a French class when I returned to Berea College at the end of the summer. I signed up and fell in love with the French language. I also took up Spanish and German and with some pronunciation pointers from my opera coach, I learned to get by in Italian.
In 1979 I was honored to receive a scholarship from Berea College for a college semester Abroad with the Experiment in International Living based out of Brattleboro, VT. I participated in a three week orientation and then headed to Caen, France in Normandy where I studied at the University of Caen. We spent three weeks in Paris and travelled to southern France. After the semester was over I spent two months traveling in Germany, Italy, Greece, Austria, Belgium and Spain. I truly felt like I had come 'home'. I had very powerful "DEJA-VU experiences in both France and Italy and was told by an Astrologer and Psychic some years later that my past two lives were in France and that I had had lifetimes involved with Opera in Italy. I found this very interesting to be hearing from a woman I had never seen before in my entire life. This helped set me upon the paranormal, metaphysical and spiritual path and offered an explanation as to why learning languages was so easy for me and why I loved opera when no one in my family speaks a foreign language or likes opera. None of them even went to college.
Writing has always been a first love. As a child I would write poems and verses and little ditties. As I grew older I began writing more and to this day I have written three books of poetry, the most recent, DAWN'S KISS, which came out May 2009. I believe that poetry is the language of the soul, and I shall always consider myself first and foremost a BARD and POET. Afterall, I was born in Bardstown, KY. The Fates decreed way back then my destiny as a Bard.
Writing many other things also appeals to me as my HUBS show. I love to write self-help and Psychology Articles and books. I love to write about my Paranormal, and Psychic Experiences, and I love to write humorous books. I have a couple in the making. I write for several magazines and a few newsletters where I offer an inspirational writing, some insight, and respond to a couple questions in a psychic reading. I also enjoy being interviewed on web/radio shows and have several coming up.
I also have my writing heroes/heroines. Walt Whitman, whose Leaves of Grass has been my bedside companion for many years and will be until I leave this world. E.E. Cummings. Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thomas Mann. Kahlil Gibran (notably THE PROPHET), Rumi. St. Teresa de Avila. Henry David Thoreau. Paul Verlaine. Arthur Rimbaud. Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Edna St. Vincent Millay. I adore Emily Dickenson, Edgar Allen Poe and many others.
Well, I suppose that is enough about me. I will end this by saying 'NAMASTE" I salute the inner light within you! May your each and every dream come true. May you know that you are not alone and that your guides and angels are there standing by to help you to realize your dreams and actualize your goals.
May the spark of your own soul ignite your hopes, dreams and give you the passion to pursue them with total heartfelt unwavering devotion. As I say in one of my HUBS "IF YOU CAN DREAM IT YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT!" I know this to be true from personal experience.
I struggle with depression at times and have been for most of my life. I refuse to go on meds. I was pretty much alone during those lonely teen age years, being tossed from foster home to foster home. My father was cruel to my mother and always put me down. Now I see that his meanness made me stronger, but it still wounded my tender sensitive soul and heart and healing may be a lifetime pursuit, albeit it, a worthy one. Sometimes the old memories come back. But I am a FIGHTER! I reached out for help. Help arrived for that is how it goes. When we are ready to GROW and HEAL we will attract the help that we need via the LAW OF ATTRACTION. I've seen it work too many times to be a non-believer!
Yes, there are days I don't want to get out of bed. Days I feel like a wayfarer and stranger in a strange land. However, I refuse to stay in the pit for if we do, we only sink further into the muck and mire of the abyss. When I need a lift, I read from THE SECRET by Lynn Grabhorn, Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking, Ask and it is given by Jerry and Esther Hicks, The Bible or EXCUSE ME YOUR LIFE IS WAITING by Lynn Grabhorn: two books that grace my nightstand and I constantly recommend them to clients, friends and family.
We have ups and downs in life. C'est la Vie! as the French say. Such is life! And yet there are so many wonderful and beautiful gems and treasures if we will but stop and smell the roses. For instance we read a HUB that touches our soul and that we can relate to. We find a nickel, quarter or even a penny from Heaven as I call it. We lose ourself in the beauty of the rose bushes, and my indoor collection of PLANTS that I love to watch grow, and Yes, I talk to my plants and I know they can feel the 'love'. The glow of a child's eyes as it looks at us with pure innocence and wonder. "The moment we least expect it, Love looks at us through a child's eyes' I say in my poem ALL IS STILL.
That poem was a gift to me from muse on a very sad day. I took a walk in the park, and this little boy, around the age of three, looked at me so intently as he passed me by. He gave me the biggest smile and his eyes twinkled and glowed. My sadness departed and my heart sang with joy and hope. My faith in humanity was renewed. I knew that I could go on. I knew that I had to.
Remember Life is for living, not existing, and remember the story of the the Little Engine that Could that said, "I think I can. I think I can."
Yes, we can!
