Mike Holland started his career working in the construction industry as a graduate structural engineer. He subsequently moved into journalism, writing for specialist magazines reporting on the engineering industry, and later worked on a daily newspaper.
He returned to work within industry as a public relations specialist, with spells working ‘in house’ within a major engineering company and in a large consultancy.
In 1987 he was a founding partner in Smye Holland Associates, the Peterborough-based marketing communications agency which in 2012 was renamed as Metrix marketing. The firm specialises in working with clients in the construction, environment and waste management, manufacturing and high-technology sectors.
Mike spent 15 years as a trustee and director of Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) where he sat on a number of the trust’s management and other committees. For several years subsequently he was chairman of PECT Consultancy Ltd (PCL), the trust’s commercial trading company which provides a range of environmental consultancy services. He is now a non-executive director of PCL and an advisor to the PECT board.
He has been a union shop steward and branch chairman, a member of the Court and Senate of the University of Bath, a local school governor and a trustee of the Norman Cross Eagle Appeal. He is currently chairman of the Peterborough Liberal Democrats and is an active member of several organisations involved in conservation and the environment.
He is a Chartered Marketer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). His professional qualifications include an honours degree in engineering and a post-graduate diploma in marketing as well as membership of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. He is a former secretary of the CIM’s Leicestershire branch and is a member of the executive committee of the Levitt Group, a national organisation for senior marketing executives which is affiliated to the CIM.
An accomplished lecturer and trainer, Mike has delivered seminars, presentations and courses for Cambridge University, the Institute of Directors, Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the National Housing Federation and the Management Development Network. He has also run in-house events for clients as diverse as publishing company EMAP and The London Internet Exchange.
The father of two young adults and grandfather of two girls, Mike lives in Werrington, just north of Peterborough, UK, with his wife Kathy.
