Bihar is a very ancient state of the Ganga delta region. It goes long back to the first human civilization, which started in the banks of Ganga River. Several ancient literature works mention about this place and one of the famous epics Ramayana says that Sita, the daughter of King Janak and wife of Lord Rama is portrayed as the princess of the state of Bihar. Apart from literature, even the towns today symbolize the ancient presence of its princess. Some of the towns with the names as Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Madhubani, and Darbhanga prove that Sita was the princess of this land. The birthplace of site, Punaura is now located at the west side of Sitamarhi. Even the place Janakpur, where Sita and Rama married each other is located in the border of Nepal, which covers the Northern frontier of the state of Bihar. With all these places exactly mentioned in the same way, as they exist in the literature, it is very clear that the writer Valmiki should have lived in and around the Bihar region.
The ancient history of Bihar had many renowned characters. The famous Buddha got his enlighten in Bihar. King Ashok the Mauryan Emperor built a temple Bodh Gaya for Buddha here. The famous Jain Lord Mahavir attained nirvana in Bihar. Guru Gobind Singh became a saint in Sikhism in this state. The famous Nalanda University was established during the Gupta period. Both spiritual and Literature ruled this great land.
The glory of the state of Bihar was at the peak during the ancient history and started to decline to the bottom during the medieval period. This is due to the invasion of the entire country. Gupta dynasty could not stand still against the highest pressure from the invaders. Bihar, which was so renowned almost, lost all its wealth. The famous established educational centers and museum were burnt. Bihar in modern history was dominated by the Bengal region. During British rule rulers from Calcutta ruled Bihar. The governors from the Bengal region undertook most of the renowned historical centers.
Bihar restored its past glory and is now in full fledged to give the world the best of its work. It has excelled in agriculture, industries, and education fields. A full twist in the history of Bihar happened after the freedom struggle.
