Dr. Abdul S. Rao is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Research Officer, the Institute of Women’s Health of North America (www.iwhna.org). He graduated with M.B.B.S., from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan (1983) and subsequently got his M.A., in Physiology from Boston University (1990), and D.Phil in Immunology/Pathology from University of Oxford (1993). After his graduation, he served as Demonstrator in Physiology at Dow Medical College (1984-85); Instructor in Physiology at the Aga Khan University (1985-87); Post-doctoral Fellow at the Harvard University School of Medicine (1989-90) and Clinical Instructor in the Nuffield Department of Surgery, John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford (1990-92). He joined Department of Surgery as Assistant Professor and Division Chief for Cellular Transplantation in 1993. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and to full Professor of Immunology, Microbiology & Surgery in 2000 when he moved to Drexel University College of Medicine as the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. In 2004, he accepted an appointment as Professor of Biology and Vice Provost for Research and Dean, College of Graduate Studies at the Middle Tennessee State University. In 2006, he joined University of South Florida College of Medicine as Professor of Molecular Medicine and Surgery and Vice Dean for Research & Graduate Studies. He was also the Founding Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences at this University. In March 2009, Dr. Rao joined the Institute as its CEO and Chief Research Officer. He is also a Professor at Strayer University where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Rao has over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He has delivered more than 200 invited talks at national and international meetings and is considered an expert in induction of transplantation tolerance, xenotransplantation, surgical treatment of type I diabetes, post-transplant lymphomas and prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. His research has been supported by the NIH, JDFI, and many other Federal, State and private agencies and pharmaceutical companies. He has served on the editorial boards of many international journals and as reviewer for the NIH, the European Union and many other prestigious organizations. For his contributions to science, teaching, public service and for his scholarly distinction, in 2005, Dr. Rao was also selected as a Senior Scholar by Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines.
