James M. Dougherty has been working in clay since the late '60s after leaving the University of California, Chico, Upon that departure from Chico State, after a course of study in art, his travels took him to Northern Germany where he served a one-year apprenticeship under the direction of a nationally known German potter, Brigitte Boehm.
It was during that time in Germany that Dougherty realised that clay (not exclusively pottery) was the direction he wanted to explore and develop. It was the tutelage and influence of Brigitte Boehm that inspired James to his current activity, success, and choice of vessel expression in clay.
