May 11 - June 10 Hub Challenge Efforts
I challenged myself in a hub challenge contest during the months of May and June. Many others attempted to publish 100 hubs in 30 days and I tried my hand at the 30 hubs in 30 days. This was an 'unofficial' competition and I managed to put out 16 hubs that I was pleased with in 30 days.
Hub Challenge Hubs:
1. Caller in the House 2. The Exploding Cactus 3. Accidental Survival in Urban Legends 4. Paul Bunyan 5. Categories of Folklore 6. Fairies and Little People 7. Vanishing Hitch Hikers 8. Now - just for the record, here's my opinion on most 'boring,' 'most exciting,' 'most frightening,' and 'most time-consuming' tales to research:
Most Boring: Skinned Tom - there seems to be one standard, boring version of this tale and it seems a tale of stolen details, the bare basics, from other 'lurking killer' stories and lovers lane cautionary tales * Note - if you know of MORE Skinned Tom versions, please SAVE ME FROM BOREDOM and contact me!
Most Exciting: Mothman, Springheel Jack - the entities within each of these phenomenon (not really 'tales' - these are considered unexplained phenomenon) are eerily similar entities from two different eras (Mothman - modern day, Jack - Victorian Era) and locations (Mothman, in the USA - Jack, in England), and most likely, the two are indications that people in both eras and both locations share the same fears and perceptions, though distanced by time and place. Both these entities have the common feature of being unsolved mysteries and of having had HUGE exposure from media sources...yet they are still unexplained and are largely unidentified creatures/beings.
Most Frightening: The Goatman of Maryland, The Bunnyman of Clifton - these two are also related in form. Characters lurk and deliver punishment to victims who dare to hone in on their territory. Mainly, it seems that both the Goatman and the Bunnyman might not affect the lives of humans, but for humans intruding upon Goatman and Bunnyman space...we think...I'm becoming convinced, more and more that what is frightening about these stories is more the society which perpetuates these tales, rather than the Goatman or Bunnyman themselves!
Most Time-Consuming to Research: Beast of Gevaudan, Legend of Sawney Bean "Beast" versions are related to werewolves and the information about werewolves, particularly in France and other parts of Europe goes on forever... "Bean" is an incredibly intricate series of history bits and possibilities all wrapped up in Scottish lore, partly explained, mostly unverifiable, and the lore goes on forever...I'll probably never finish 'studying' these topics
