Dr H says
If the plate is hot ,try gardening gloves.
If the plate is really hot, try welders gloves.
If the plate if full, try a tray or a large piece of (flat ) wood
If the plate is broken, try a carrier bag or a bin.
If the plate is empty try your right hand (however; if you are left handed then you could substitute the right hand for your left, either way it should work just fine)
If you are wishing to show your plate then you could try a plate easel or a flat based wooden plate holding device.
There are plastic and metal versions out there but i would not suggest those as you will lose the rustic look .
If you are on a camping holiday try Duck-tape TM
If you are on a yacht try a cut out beach ball stuffed with the ends of Q-tips or old socks.
I hope I've been of help
