Quotes by Abraham Maslow

“If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.”

“If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life.”

“A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself.”

"What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.”

“The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.”

“The story of the human race is the story of men and women selling themselves short.”

“If I were dropped out of a plane into the ocean and told the nearest land was a thousand miles away, I'd still swim. And I'd despise the one who gave up.”

“The fact is that people are good, if only their fundamental wishes are satisfied, their wish for affection and security. Give people affection and security, and they will give affection and be secure in their feelings and their behavior.”

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs

  • The bottom chart; Physiological is most crucial which talks about mans need for oxygen, food, water, sex, sleep and excretion. These six are essential for mans survival and also to preserve his civilization.
  • Safety category follows next which revolves around protection of body, employment, morality, family and health is considered essential for an individual.
  • Love and Belonging are another classification, which involves understanding, family and sexual intimacy.
  • Esteem is another class that includes self-esteem, confidence, achievement and respect for others.
  • Self-actualization is a category that involves morality, creativity, problem solving and acceptance of facts.

Humans need the above to grow emotionally and physiologically.

Man's basic instinct to follow the above categories

Love is an essential component to help them achieve the above categories. Love for a partner, friend, family is different, but the emotions that flow for all the above relationships help a human sustain and be independent yet productive.

Love is an affection that makes a human feel on top of the world. This Attachment towards another person makes every moment energetic as it has passion and yearning to be around them.

Falling in Love is easy, but to maintain that relationship is tough and needs quite a bit of work.

Love can only grow if we take the pains to cherish it and nurture it in all ways. Respect is an essential being in all kinds of relationships.

As kids, a human is taught to respect his parents, siblings. Thus, the journeys that love encounter with such relationships; do not face so much ambiguity as the love between two partners. These two partners have to overcome their differences and their egos to come to a mutual decision and decide upon living under the same roof, and that is a challenge.

Life needs love to grow physically, and emotionally. But, with the constant pressure of work and deadlines to meet, there are times we could take the love of our partner for granted. Not realizing that when we are surrounded by love, their deep, honest, and caring touch is rejuvenating our mind and soul. Love is like sunshine, and each day it is bringing in joy and light, in the lives of many who are touched by it.

But the only essence that is missing is the Awareness of it.

If man is aware of what love brings in his life, he will learn to treasure it, and be ready to make sacrifices to grow old with it.

Love grows when an effort is put into it. It will have no boundaries if we open our arms to it and learn to accept our partner, and forget pointing fingers at each other by putting aside our egos. This love, which was initially a lust, will nurture into something beautiful that will be shared between a couple even when they are all gray and old and fragile.

Love grows with age, only if efforts are made.

We all have mutual needs as defined by the noted physiologist, Maslow. We just have to learn to shape it and mold it in a way that will be beautiful and be with us until we breathe our last. All humans have problems in their lives; it is up to that person to get muddled up or sort things out between his/her partners and learn to accept it.

If we have a strong liking towards a human, it is up to us to straighten out our priorities and give time and space for this love to grow. Unfortunately, this love does not grow overnight; it takes a lot of nurturing and maintenance. That comes with putting our egos aside and learning to listen to each other while adapting to each others' faults and shortcomings.

Human, an intelligent soul

Human is an intelligent soul, and he should realize that this is one life he has got. He can either get muddled up and complicate his relationship or count his blessings and try to sort things out. Love is an essential element in our lives, and we need it not only to extend our civilization but also to grow emotionally and have a life full of treasured memories.

Choice is ours!

Studied his theory some time ago when I was still in the University. I would say that love is actually the fuel for all needs....and yes, Ruchira, it makes the world go round. Perfect and sharing!

Ruchira, very good article. I have Maslow's pyramid on my brain forever - I used to teach adults/coach adults about leadership and management and used it extensively - him and Mr Kolb are both old friends of mine :o)

Very smart you are Ruchira! I believe everything you said is true. I was just talking to My oldest about this last night. I told her relationships are kind of like cars. You have to treat them sweet, change the oil, feed it some gas. Every now and then polish it up and take it out on the town and show it off! If you don't it will just get old and the tires will dry rott:) lol

My buddy, Abe Maslow, would be very happy with you, Ruchira, for the way you translated the meaning of his actualization theories. I always had respect for him because he was one of the first famous psychologists who studied mentally healthy people instead of those who were mentally ill.

When I saw the title "Love it and it will Grow," I thought about my garden. I've been trying to plant things. I don't love to plant things, but I'm hoping they will grow! I love your quotes!
