Is it a disease to be homosexual? Are there gay/lesbian cure? Why Catholic Church is against homosexuality?

Now gays and lesbians can get married in New York. Few other states also legalized homosexual marriages in US. Throughout the world there are several people against homosexuality, gays and lesbians. Many parents are anxiously searching if there is any cure for gays and lesbians. Above all, many homosexuals and the society feels that church is against gays and lesbians. I will address all these points in this article.

In order to understand this, you have to understand what a disease is. Do you know what is dyslexia? Dyslexic people have difficulty in learning and effects skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. It may sound like a minor problem, but being dyslexic is a very difficult situation esp. for children. Here is an interesting article about dyslexia. The cause for dyslexia is that they have a unique brain architecture and wiring. Being dyslexic doesn't mean they are stupid. Dyslexic people have higher IQ and are very successful. Is dyslexia a disease? Is there a medical treatment for dyslexia? Dyslexia is not a disease. Even if it is defined as a disease, medical science don't have a treatment to change the brain architecture. (unfortunate truth is that modern medicine don't cure disease, it just kills the symptoms). What is done now is to give special training for dyslexic people to come up. For instance schools in UK give special arrangements for dyslexic people.

Hence, please don't treat homosexuals as diseased people. They just have a different neural wiring in the brain. It is not their fault. The weakness of dyslexic people is compensated by higher IQ than normal people. Similar is the case of homosexuals. Homosexual people is reported to have a higher IQ level than the average population.

So, even though gays and lesbians are a bit different than the rest of the population, they do have some strengths over others. Hence dear friends, please don't outcast homosexuals. They are not sick people.

While flying from Boston to Frankfurt, I asked a Jewish teenager sitting next to my seat, if I could get converted to Jewish. He replied that Jews welcome all, unlike catholic church which does not like gays and lesbians.

I have never read any official article that says, church does not welcome gays and lesbians. According to my understanding church is against the act of homosexuality and not homosexuals.

Have you ever felt urged to steal a piece of chocolate from the grocery store? "A kleptomaniac is someone who steals a lot but not particularly for monetary gain". The situation of Kleptomaniac is very similar to dyslexic or homosexuals; they have a different brain set up. It is not their fault. However the act of Kleptomanic is wrong and is punishable. God loves us all in the way we are. If we have weakness, he gives us enough strength to over come that. Even though we fail several times in our weakness, he gives us strengh to try again. This is the love of God I know. Many people quote BIble and says God punishes homosexuals. If they had read Bible in the right context, they would understand that God hates the act of homosexuality and not the gays and lesbians. There is no greater commandment in Bible than to love one another'.

So, please don't take it wrong. Church is not against gays or lesbians but the homosexual act. Don't get disappointed if any Bishop has talked in condemning manner about homosexuals. There are several Bishops who have been involved in scandals in the Church. More over, Church is not headed by Bishop or Pope. They are just the appointed leaders. Jesus Christ is the leader of catholic church. So never feel rejected or isolated. God loves us all, including gays, lesbians, dyslexic as well as kleptomaniacs.

In western world there is no government laws that forbids a heterosexual person to have sex with multiple partners. It is also not illegal to live together before getting married. These man made rules change over time and will be different from one place to another. The reason is that there is no frame of reference. For instance if a 13 year old girl tell her mom that she is moving out with her boyfriend and want to have a child in few months, most mothers will tell that "no,this is not the right time for that you should concentrate in your studies". Well, if she is smart she will tell her "Mom, in your perspective this is not the right time. But in my views, this is the right time". It is difficult to judge who is right and who is wrong as each one of them have their own prespective about the moral laws.

What is lacking here is a frame of reference that is solid. The moral code that the church teaches has been the same for the last 2000 years. Kingdoms came and went. Countries are formed and disappeared but the laws of the Church remained the same. Adultery is a sin as well as fornication. Most catholics have the complete freedom according to the law of the country to have sex with as many people as they want. However, most devot catholics control their desires and obey the commandments of God given through Church.

I can understand the feelings of gays and lesbians. They have the similar feeling as a straight man feels towards a beautiful women. Most good heterosexuals could control themselves. I believe if homosexuals really desire it, they too can abstain from homosexual acts, in order to have eternal life and to live in the love of God.

The best cure that lasts is prayer and counselling. The best person who can help is Holy Spirit. He is the promised 'helper' who strengthens us at the time of our weakness. Find a priest and ask him to pray for you. When he asks what should he pray for, tell him to pray that you are filled with Holy Spirit. This is the best cure that and is ever lasting. It not only helps you to triumph over the situation, but protects your soul and gives you eternal life. (may sound more philosophical but if you think more about this, it is very easy to understand).

Being gay or lesbian is not a disease that someone should or can be cured of. It is a type of mind, like any other, with its own particular strengths and weaknesses. Please respect gays and lesbians and hate the act of homosexuality. Being kleptomanic is normal, but the acts of kleptomaniac is wrong. Homosexual acts are a mortal sin. If you are a gay or lesbian, thank God for that and pray for his strength and Holy Spirit to overcome the weaknesses associated with that; but enjoy the day as you have several strengths that normal people don't have.
