God CANNOT Lie

Updated on July 21, 2010

Hebrews 6:18

I have heard it said many times by well meaning Christians, "God will not lie". Or they say, "God does not lie". Or even, "God never lies". This is all truth, nothing false about such statements.

However, to get the proper understanding of God not lying, it should be stated, "God CANNOT lie". Because it isn't that He will not or that He does not or that He has never or will never, but that it is impossible for Him to lie. He cannot lie. This is an important bit of information to understand (and understand correctly) because it helps to shed light on God's character.

When we absorb this truth into our spirits, it can revolutionize the very Bible and our comprehension and our faith. It may be impossible to have the God kind of faith if this understanding is remiss in a person's knowledge of God.

How could we believe for God's best, if we thought He might lie? We are a people that want guarantees. When someone says something and it is important to us, we want some sort of conclusive evidence that this person and their word are one and the same.

Especially in today's society, this is relevant to our faith. Lying is too often excused or looked upon as the 'little sin'. Back in the day, when a man said something, it was implied that he meant what he said, and his reputation suffered a great deal if he were to break or go back on his word.

Over time, lies became commonplace and contracts and swearing in and detectors are now the norm. Most people do not mean what they say or say what they mean or take their own word serious enough. This makes it inevitably tough to believe God when we cannot even believe what comes out of our own mouths.

One of the major keys to believing God and His Word, is to make a practice to keep our own word and follow through with what we say. We must be a person of enough integrity to honor our own words and let nothing steal our truth. When we practice keeping our own word, we will eventually over time, make it easier for ourselves to believe what God says in His Word. And our faith will be rewarded.
God does not just give us His Word .. God IS His Word.  He cannot be separated from His word.  When we take time to meditate upon God's Word, we are meditating on God Himself.  Be sure that the Word that is meditated upon is God speaking, as the Bible has many phrases and words not spoken by God.

Hebrews 6:18 It is impossible for God to lie.
